Can't find it again but you said earlier in the posts about insurance, I would use flux direct when the project is finished, I have an 86 90 that was a 2.5 petrol and I had a 3.5 disco engine in and the premium went up by about 250 but only cause I used a discovery v8 which has more power than the defender, but try them they are so easy to use with insuring all ya mods and that. Going to keep my eye on this post like everyone else on here I'm looking forward to seeing the end result

progress updates, the steel for the engine mounts was delivered today and the rear crank seal and crankshaft pulley are waiting at the post office to be collected after work tomorrow. so all being well there should be some progress over the weekend..... hopefully :roll eyes:

Are you changing the engine mount on the chassis or just making a new engine mounting bracket like in the attached.?
 
fair play that bulkhead and chassis were hanging excellent job on the bulkhead thou mate thumbs up from me.

Thanks chap, strangely enough i quite enjoyed repairing that bulkhead. chassis would have been a little more challenging but for the long run i think i made the right decision.
 
right then, had a slightly more successful day today started off with finishing the engine by fitting the replacement crank seal and finishing the timing belt renewal with the improved crank pulley. then made a start on the engine mount/convertor jobby. basically a adapter to allow the 300 tdi engine to be fitted using standard 2.5 td engine chassis mounts.

the plan is to test fit it to find what the clearance is like and how much material i need to remove to allow access to the oil filter. once finalised it will be marked up, the tacks ground off then cleaned up and fully welded. going to have to go "old school" when welding and dust of the fixed shade mask as my auto darkening mask has given up the ghost after just a year so not best pleased.

A bit of progress today, my least favourite task of the project so far..... putting the engine in, had a hell of a job trying to jiggle it in on my own even worse knowing it has to come out and go back in again.

it would seem 6mm is a bit too thick for my MIG pretty confident it will do the job though,

anyone know anything about the 300, do u recommend refitting the bell housing support brackets? it would be easy enough to cut them off and refit them onto my fabricated mount. just wondering whether there deemed necessary

Thanks for the offer bluehaze its very kind of you,i think it will go in easier next time, i have been advised on where i was going wrong, i was tightening the engine rubber fully and should leave it loose to help locate the engine.

Made a little progress this evening started by taking the engine out, as no one has any advice regarding the engine brackets i extended it to accommodate the flywheel supports,

No no my wiring is hammered all 2.5 petrol and bodged for the v8 so it's all breaking and in thinking of putting a full new one and don't know if it's difficult or not

i wouldn't have thought the wiring would be that much different going from petrol to petrol, but can't comment having not seen ur wiring, depending on what you mean by "hammered" i would consider just replacing your damaged bits would keep costs down, i take it you have looked at the costs of new looms, you maybe able to get away with just a new engine loom ?
