Well convinced it was either fuel or air was my problem, took the pipe off intake off turbo and gave the shaft a wiggle, had the farmer and his son both independently had a turn and a wiggle..

Conclusion

it ain't very good

So i reckon it is broken with an F

so best get on the internet tonight and find a video on how to change the cartridge, are there any makes i should be avoiding or someone would recommend
They are very easy to change. You need a 13mm spanner and some heavy duty (proper heavy duty) circlip pliers.
I bought my replacement CHRA from Fourby
https://fourby.co.uk/epages/950004277.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950004277/Products/CHRA

Thanks my man, knew you would be the man to ask, having read your 300tdi thread, knew you had changed yours etc.
Was it a non runner when you got it? Looking at the turbo it looks like it would be burning more oil than mine

Started and ran, still does but would not rev or run correctly smoking like a ba####d

But was convinced it was fuel / air related, seem to rev better with air filter off

Just had a random thought and took the intake pipe off turbo and hey ho it is on the bench , whether it will fix all my issues who knows. got to help i feel.

Burning oil will make them smoke like a bastard :D Yours looked like there was a lot of oil coming through it.

EDIT
How didn't the the auto swear feature kick in there

Going to order an new cartridge in the morning, think standard rather than hybrid.

Yep going to clean it all tomorrow and the pipes, might have the intercooler off and clean that as well,

I stuck to standard. I presume the hybrid, when it produces more boost, will cause the FIP to deliver more fuel, but there may be a limit to the FIP without tweaking it. I couldn't be bothered getting in to that malarkey.
Take the top pipe off and have as look in the intercooler. See if the intercooler looks clean and shiny inside. To be fair, the oil on your turbo looked filthy and like tar. Having said that, the force of air coming out of the turbo and through the intercooler is hellish. I doubt much can get the chance to settle. If it looks clean via the top hose connection there's a good chance it's clean throughout (In my experience) If it looks a bit grubby then it probably needs a clean. Your compressor blades look a bit iffy with impact damage :(

yeah the blades def look a bit had it, some times it spins and sometimes it locks. got movement up and down so hope teh compressor housing is ok.

Think the farm may have an inspection camera so will give that a look tomorrow down the intercooler

Unless the blades have hit the housing (didn't look like it) the housing will be fine. The bearings controlling all movement are within the CHRA. The CHRA is it and it just sits inside the housing. Apart from the CHRA the rest is very basic, just a housing for the CHRA to perform in.

Now you've got your turbo off you will be able to clearly see the four bolts on the turbine side and the massive circlip on the compressor side. You really need a very strong set of circlip pliers for that big fella. I've got a set of different shapes ie straight legged and ones with a 90 degree bend in the legs. I found the 90 degree bend ones the best to use. It's a five minute job to swap the CHRA, if you have the right circlip pliers ;) Just make sure you put pencil marks on the old CHRA and both sides of the turbo casing before you take it apart. That way when you put the new CHRA in you know how to line it up with both halves.

Here we go, marked it up in line with the oil pipes holes used the tipex pen,

ordered the Fourby One this morning which was dispatched today..

Got cleaning to do of pipes and intercooler, think i might treat it to some new hoses, acuator pipe snapped as i took clip off as did the clip.

Got to find new ones of them.

might check the towbar electrics over weekend as am waiting on bits for 90 and the 110 or watch the 110 4c i have for sale on the bay which ends Sunday, cant believe how much it has made i wouldn't have dare ask that much for it

Waiting on gasket and new hoses to be delivered later in week..

So today after a spot of sub-contracting for a man, i spent an hour bolting stuff back together, refitted the intercooler, now cleaned, and the bottom hose to it.

Refiited cowl and viscous fan, what a pain they are to start, bolted horn and radiator/ intercooler top panel back in.
Refitted grill.

Put oil pipe back on turbo, replaced wastegate rubber hose and clips, bolted wastegate acuator on to manifolds, wrestled the wastegate acuator rod on the the exhaust manifold.

Put the grill back in

Now waiting on the clips arriving before bolting it back on, fingers crossed it will go ok

So Put the manifolds and the new turbo all back on the vehicle this afternoon.

Landy started straight away, ran ok and revved up. some smoke but a lot less than before

Left it ticking over to warm up.. then when i went back revved it it spluttered and died.

Started it again it is hesitant and still smokes not quite as bad but smokes.

Have had the intercooler pipe of and it is clean and dry after 10 mins ticking over.

Think it must be Fuel Injection Pump related...

Think it is not advancing correctly.

Hopefully taking a mates 300tdi of his defender this weekend for rebuild so hope he may lend me a FIP to try...

F##ked Off.

Mates engine out and he drove mine, took him 10 mins to get to the barn and back... lol

so ripped FIP off

have got my mates half fitted, just got front pullet and belt to fit followed by aux belt and then radiator etc..

Hopefully by lunchtime tomorrow, should have either eliminated or diagnosed if it is the FIP
