Ha ha havent had much luck on this project, half convinced the FIP might be duff and you know how much i love FIP with my thread in the 200tdi part
 
So after much studying and faffing

have finally worked out which direction the change over tap relates to which tank

It has a fuel sedimenter drivers side with a change over valve block there.

Turns out the front tank goes into that and the rear tank goes straight through.

Had to remove pipework etc to test it.

A mate dropped off a boost pressure pipe he took off his 300tdi so i could test mine

and guess what had forgotten i had robbed the battery to try on the 110 4c in the barn at home....doh..!!

so wrestled with fuel gauge issues instead.

The gauge robbed from the 110 4c works if i put one wire to live one to earth

so thought if i wire that to battery on one side, then out to tank sender and other tank sender wire to earth this should give a reading...

it goes straight to Full...

does that mean sender knackered or am i doing something wrong

cant get a reading on the gauge in 300tdi 110 at all but not unconvinced that there is an issue with the electrical switch on the changeover lever.

Got power to it but not sure i have at sender..


Also i started to spray the bolts and nuts with plusgas to aid spring and shock change later in week when parts arrive.
 
so managed to get the old spring and shock off the drivers side by undoing shock bolts top and bottom and propped the body and lower the axle on the air jack applied a tyre lever and out they came.

Put it back, the same way then when i went bolt up the shocker top the nut got stuck half way down couldn't get it up or down, so had to be brave and undo the turret rings., thankfully i had be soaking them with plus gas, all came undone.

On closer inspection the threads on both shocks weren't great and the nuts were worse, after careful tap use on good one the threads held and one side fitted

2nd side i took turrent out the top and assembled the top on the bench, after re-tapping top and bottom of damaged shock with M12 tap fitted that and all good.

Think i may have found part of my leaning problem

Good job really as still got fuel gauge issue to sort and it is now running like a bag of poo.. think while messing with the fuel tank and working out which way the lever fed which tank it must have sucked up some old diesel out of the front tank, wont rev very well and wont hold revs just dies away.. and smokes like a ba###rd gonna drop the filter and change the diesel in that and see, might be lift pump i guess, just hope its not FIP as with my track record with them..see my thread in 200tdi for section for more details.

Right to the workshop and see if i can fix my gas boiler as well, think top hat jet is blocked got that in bits as well this morning, and the compresser is not starting at this end of farm, so much to fix.....

When actually it is cold and the wood burner is very appealing top sit in front of...
 
So since last post have

Fixed the compressor, and got my boiler working better..

on the 110

have dropped diesel filter, drained it, refilled with fresh derv

started it and it runs fine at tickover, only when u rev it that it wont maintain any form of rev and just dwindles away to stall or too lumpy tickover.

Have had the filter off again, took bleed screw out and pump lift pump manually throw derv out a treat..

Got it running at tickover until it was warm, but rad still cold, so got thermostat out and on kitchen top to test shortly..

Still won't rev and clouds of white smoke when you try

So took viscous fan and cowling off, to check pump timing, looks ok ish cant be precise as both my timing pins are with the 2 200tdi pumps away at derv repair replace

So thought i know i will check level of derv in filter in case is being starved of fuel.

I have pressure at the bleed screw when i undo it it spurts derv out,, is this normal or could i have a blockage somewhere on the return possible and would this cause my issues??
 
If the return is the "pin hole" type and its in the feed you will have no engine revs and lift pump pressure will be high at filter
 
i cannot remember if 300 tdi had it but many bosch ve type pumps had an ordinary banjo bolt in the feed and a restricted one in the return in order to raise internal pressure. some howewver had an adaptor between the return banjo and the pump which contained the restrictor

Took the banjo' off filter and supply end of pump, cleaned banjos with airline and blew it down that fuel pip..all good

So my return has a pin hole banjo in it. gave that a thorough going over with the air line and then blew up the pipe towards last injector, didnt want to try getting teh pipe off at injector looked very hard plastic, therefore brittle..


stripped off return to tank joiner and blew air both directions there.

It started and ran and seemed better.

Joined all the wires at fuel gauge which now works so all good there, put wheel on and backed the 110 off the ramp left it running in yard, then went back to it 2 mins later and realised it was running on the side tank with crap diesel in it..had been meddling with the tap whilst doing fuel gauge work....DOH

So tried to drive it but just smoking and no go, so parked it went home for lunch..

In the afternoon picked up a brand new fuel filter, last one has only done hour or less of running in the workshop.. but safe than sorry.

So cleaned all pipes again as above, starts runs revs a bit but not how it should clouds of white smoke...

Cleaned the return banjo again..

started it got it running but smoking a bit not great revs but marginally better, ripped air cleaner off in a foul temper and it would rev and not stall. lot less smoke.. result i thought

Left it and walked spaniels came back
back to square one, ripped air cleaner off but it would not move 50m across yard on the flat.

Spun it on the starter into the barn and locked it up..

Any suggestions before i take matches and a can to it...

Only thing i can think if is FIP but don't want to go there after my ongoing 200tdi epic with those

Thinking of undoing the 4 screws on the top and check the pin is free and the diagphram is good..

Any help greatly appreciated, have spent hours on this bloody thing now and just when i think it is ready for MOT this happens...

maybe have done the timing belt but it locked up lovely and belt went on easy.. roughly checked it last night but lacking my pin as it is with the 200tdi pump away with the dodgy pump special****

it starts very well, though...
will check a couple of things tomorrow, apperntly lift pump can cause some odd faults
 
Lift pump normal dies if you put your foot flat to the floor & it starts to drop the revs. Then when you release it it takes a few moments to fill the pump as is using suction from the tank.
Have you got a small electric fuel pump to put in line to rule it out?

that sounds familar, might just buy one and hope it cures it..
 
On my racer I have a facet just wired in but does not permanently run. Only use it when we bleed the system. The lift pump happily pulls diesel through it.
We also had a problem with fuel starvation & it was a small slither of wood gone up the pick up pipe. We ran the pump just so we could see the amount of diesel not coming out
 
Well

I took the bleed screw out of filter, turned it over, started it, rev the vehicle up and....

Can safely predict the lift pump is fine, inner wing outer wing and the grain drier drive through pit shed floor ( where i have been relegated to from workshop eviction) are not covered in diesel.

Reckon even though it is not running right it was spurting diesel in a solid jet about 6 - 8 inches in the air.

So next steps plan
top of the advance on the fuel injection pump check inside there.
remove Pressure relief valve from front of Fuel injection pump.



If they all look good then try and run motor off a jerry can with pipe to lift pump.

but given when i ran the engine with return disconnected it was pouring diesel out, didn't realise that much was returned back to tank so not hopefully the can run will help.

if all that fails then guess it is Fuel Injection Pump time and you know how i love them............NOT see my thread in 200tdi section

someone here mentioned a member called Diesel Bob, is he still about and operating, would sooner send it to someone who knows and is respected in the community, as where my 200tdi pumps are currently are never having another pump of mine...
 
Well convinced it was either fuel or air was my problem, took the pipe off intake off turbo and gave the shaft a wiggle, had the farmer and his son both independently had a turn and a wiggle..

Conclusion

it ain't very good

So i reckon it is broken with an F

so best get on the internet tonight and find a video on how to change the cartridge, are there any makes i should be avoiding or someone would recommend
