tinkering yesterday a bit to see where leaks could be coming from. on top of overdrive there is a plate with four bolts, there is small hole in plate with what loos lie a tiny split pin that moves up and down about 15mm. is this a gauge for oil in the overdrive?the plate didnt want to budge, i assume its meant to come off?to put oil into overdrive i assume i undo bolt on top of overdrive housing next to plate?

The little pin is a split pin, it is meant to prevent oil being chucked out of the overdrive. The bolt behind this pin on the overdrive case is the oil fill level dipstick.
 
To add a bit, there is a baffle under that plate which is supposed to redirect the oil flow away from the hole to keep it from chucking oil all over the place. As said, that's where i tapped the plate (which yes, can be removed without any issue for the OD) drill and tap it for 1/8 NPT or whatever pipe fitting is common where you live and screw in a right-angle fitting to allow a tube to be attached for an extended vent.

You can also use a vent from an RRC/Disco/Defender axle breahter if you feel a dire need to use LR parts... :)

Here in the States and other LHD places there's an issue with installing a straight hose fitting - the parking brake shaft runs across the top of that space, so the fitting has to be under it, hence the comment on right-angle fittings.
