Hi all
I picked up my 110 hardtop 1994 300tdi on saturday and wow,i love it !!
We seem to have a bit of an oil leak from gearbox when warm and sticky window winders and an intermitent fault on the indicator stalk but i love it.
I drove back from kent to east yorkshire in it and it ran like a dream never missed a beat

I will post some pictures tommorow hopefully,its never stopped raining here today so i havent managed to get any decent pics yet.
Im going to attempt to do a service on it in the next few weeks,ive ordered oil filter,air filter,fuel filter and will pick up some engine oil this week i was thinking of 15w 40??
After ive done this i will attempt gearbox axles ect oil changes.
Is there anything else i should be doing on it as routine maintaince?

15/40 mineral oil is good for that. Brake fluid change is always good
 
Ok ,thanks,i will look into doing the brake fluid as well.
Im by no means a mechanic and its at least 20 years since i last did any real work on a car but im kind of looking forward to having a go at it again !!

They are fairly basic, and once you get used to them, are a pleasure to work on if you have good tools! :)
 
I've been using these to point my noob self in the right direction with maintenance on my 90.

Other things that spring to mind - only because they're on my own job list, apologies if you've already done this
  • Brake fluid - might want to check the water/moisture content, would have a look at the brake discs as well.
  • Grease the UJs and Propshafts
  • not really routine but may be worth having a quick check of all your lights/electricals and the fuse box
  • Check your wheel nuts - seen at least one set of pictures this weekend of someone having their wheel nuts loosened
  • Name yer lump hammer :D

I also have a clunk on taking up drive which i need to investigate but i thought i would do the service 1st

Have a twiddle of your propshafts with the gear box in neutral (chock the wheels first), it may be some play in a diff input bearing (I have it on my front diff)
 
I've tried to ad a photo of the defender but can't seem to do it.
It seems I have a few fluid leaks to investigate as well looking at the pattern on my driveway !! Gearbox/transfer box leak,powersteering leak..luckily I don't seem to have any engine oil leaks though
 
Dont get complacent, the leak from the gearbox could be engine oil ;-( . Is there any drips where the gearbox joins the engine block?

Not exactly routine maintenance, but does the service history indicate the last timing belt change? I think the official figure is every 96K or 5yrs. Most do it less than that, I think about 70K or even more frequently. If a vehicle isn't doing many miles, then age of belt will be the most important factor. Worth checking.
 
Seems to be in between gearbox and transfer box where it's leaking? Running down transfer box bit coming from somewhere nearer gearbox. I've lost no engine oil at all in 600 miles of driving but transfer box was only holding around a litre when I drained it and refilled.going to drain/refill gearbox tommorow to see how much is in as I'm worried it might be very low now
 
I was intending to get the belt done as soon as possible..roughly how much does it cost at an independent to change the belt?

+1 to this - Regardless of when it was done, unless it was done JUST before you got it. Don't take the risk, for the relatively small cost get the belt changed, it's easy as pie on a 300tdi apparently.

And as Al2O3 said, don't leave them the full age before replacing, they have been known to snap and wreck an engine long before the 'advisory' period. I think most like to do 3-4 years OR 40-60k miles, and just adjust according to the kind of pressures you're putting the vehicle under, offroading, heavy towing or just simply doing gentle driving below 60mph :)

How much would it cost to get an independent garage to change belt for me does anybody know?
 
Mine was last done in June 2013. The 'timing belt repair kit' cost £74. Then there was the labour to fit it. Unfortunately, I got a few other things done at the same time, so don't know how the labour charge was split between all of the jobs. Hopefully, someone will be able to give a more accurate assessment because I haven't done a timing belt change yet. But, if we say it took 3hrs @ £30/hr = £90 or 3hrs @£40 = £120
So, as a ball park estimate, for parts and labour you should be looking at sub £200.
As I said, hopefully someone will respond to this with something more accurate. Obviously, it's going to vary depending on claimed time taken and hourly rate charged.
 
Thanks for your reply,i will have a ring around a few places and get an idea of prices,might as well have the oil seals on cam and crank done at same time as well.
 
How much of a job is it to do the timing belt myself?
im no mechanic but ive done my fair share of bits and bobs on cars over the years
