Hi Guys,

I currently have a discovery 2 TD5 and am looking to switch to a defender 90. My question is perhaps laughable but is about economy, which matters these days. Would you say a defender would be slightly more or less economical on fuel compared with my TD5 disco?

Would appreciate any comment.

Cheers,

Tris

Quite alot depends how you drive. The vehicle itself would be lighter, but in its standard form with a 1.41 ratio transfer box it is lower geared than a disco so revs quite hard at 45mph+.

Also a little less aerodynamic I would imagine!

Depends on if your buying a 2.5 200tdi 300tdi td5 v8 2.4 2.2 etc :D

If your going to a td5 defender they are slightly de tuned compared to a disco but if you have it remapped and the higher ratio transfer gears then you will see better mpg. I used to get 33 on a run in my td5 def

A defender is more economical to run........than a block of cheese with a nuclear reactor as an engine, or so says my ten year old!!

Having run several discos and now a defender i would say the difference is minimal as for comfort forget it!

I use my '04 plate TD5 110 CSW as a daily driver, 20 miles each way every day minimum. I get between 29 and 34 depending how i drive etc.
Decat, EGR removed, higher ratio gear in txfr box gives lower noise / revs on the motorway but keeps my low ratio.

I have 145,000 miles on the clock.

how does this compare with your old disco?

Comfort out of the window. Simplicity and parts are so cheap for defenders. Mine is ex mod 90 and wow. What a machine. I can completely dismantle the roof sides and doors and drive topless in summer. Body is alum, inum Discos are good but rusty prone Mpg is same to me. I find I have become better driver in fender then discos. Bodywork. U can spray roller or even brush on
I owned disco for 6 years Scrapped.
