Probably 3 or 4 tins for the chassis.

I have just done the inside of both front wheel arches, the inside of
the engine bay, and the tunnely bits inbetween (through which
driveshafts and suspension arms) on my saab, and its used ~3/4 of a
tin (a half litre one i think)
It all had 2 coats.

I think i might stick to hammerite and underseal for the rest of it! -
will be cheaper!

If you do use POR-15 then make sure you wear gloves and a long sleeved
top, and dont shake it before using it (get loads of little bubbles
in)

D-B are typically 70 to 80 quid, but there's a cheap imitation here
(only 2 tonne capacity, not 3.5) for thirty:

The advantage is that you would pay VAT in Germany, rather than the
hassle of paying VAT and duty when it arrives. There's some difference
in rates. Nothing to stop anyone delivering a dog and picking up the
stuff as a return load.

Business, or a practical joke? Have they found it yet?

Business. I breed expensive working gundogs. This one was going
half way around the world and I don't think it's there yet.

If it isn't 500 miles from here (N of Inverness) to Manchester,
it bloody well feels like it! :(

At least I've got the kennel drains working again so now I'm off
to research German POR-15 for the alt.fan.landrover buyers
group.

wonder why they only rate it to 2 tonne? The spec looks well up to spec, so
to speak.

The "bought" one on our disco may not be genuine DB either. Mine's made to
the same spec, near enough, as that, with the exception that the 2 round
cross-pieces are actually bits of flat bar on mine. Do the same job though.

There is definite advantage in some of us doing that. A while
back there was mention of some special gearbox oil for 300Tdi's.
I researched that and it is possible to make a huge saving by
buying a gallon rather than a pint. But who needs a gallon?

The German site listed a six pack of POR15 which is a very good
idea as if your tin is not properly sealed, it will turn to one
solid black lump very quickly! Spreading the risk to six tins
makes sense.

I wonder if we shouldn't form a buyers' group? I am all for it.
I am also interested in falconry. I found a source of cheap bulk
purchase transmitter batteries and posted that information on a
newsgroup. Did not take long to find others of a similar mind
and everyone saved money. Let's go for it!

Wonder how much I need for a 101 - and its huge fuel tank ? Any comments
anyone ?

That makes three folks so far who have expressed an interest.

In my experience hammerite sticks pretty well to a nice rusty chassis.
Does seem to need redoing after a couple of years though. Did mine
about 3 years ago, and some bits are by now fairly rusty where its
chipped off/rusted through.

Frosts (http://www.frost.co.uk/) sell POR-15 which is supposed to be
more chip resistant. I've tried it on the underside of my car, so in a
year or so i can see if its actually any better than hammerite! It
definately stains your hands mroe effectively than hammerite does!

Hi Derry,
I checked the company website at por15.com and their US/Canadian price
is around 20 quid for 750ml - or around 1/5 th of the UK price.

Should we club together and get a few gallons worth shipped in ?

I have a 101 to do.

Mine worked out at £20 for a very very tiny pot. But it really
is good stuff and it does go a long way. Spend £5 on a box of
surgical gloves before you start!

I did find a German supplier who might be cheaper. After all, we
are all Europeans these days.

Just remind the bank manager that you're protecting a serious investment and
he'll give you the 2nd mortgage ;)

Four... I think I should invest in a RR worth of it!
