It's mechanical. Get some Graphite powder to lubricate it.

Spray some electrical contact cleaner in there and wiggle the key about a bit let dry then some graphite powder as Datatek mentioned and jobs a goodun.:)

do not use wd40 as a lot do it gums it up

Thanks , for that ,in Britain the lock is part o the M.O.T ...Least i know it wont lock up when driving ,thanks again I will give That a ago .....RR

It can also not help with battery drain as it thinks the ignition key is still in.
The ignition key in switch is operated by the plastic shutter at the key entry point and has no connection to the operation of the steering lock. A stuck steering lock on it's own will not cause battery drain.

Hi again ,steering locks working again (in a fashon) If when i take the key out the middle metal bit supposed to pop out ,and the lock goes on ,mine sticks ,but if i push it wi me finger ,out it pops :D..gave it a good spray wi contact cleaner ,now just waiting for graphite dry oil stuff to turn up ...so if yer locks sticking ,poke it wi yer finger,,,cheers ...RR

Mine did the same as yours, and used the finger trick, I was told to use graphite, about 3 years ago, its been fine since
