P38 1999(t) 130k.

So, i've had this car now for 15 years, and its started to have a battery drain, its been diagnosed as the alarm control module...However, i've been able to order TWO from the internet with different results.

Ok, so perhaps that may have not been a good idea to start with, but bare with me...

First one I installed, alarm fault code disappeared, battery didn't get flat and all was well with the world again...however, worked for about a week then alarm fault code re-appeared and flat battery within a few days.

Ordered second module... which didn't work at all!.

so today i've tried both the original factory-fit module, and the first one I bought online, with no success...

So, my question is this... Should I fork out the £475 for a new part, or is there something else going on that I don't know about. I'm in Plymouth, Devon, UK. Not a hotbed for land/range rover garages and the 'local specialists' know that.

help landyzone members... your my only hope.

PS. its not the alternator or battery, as these have been replaced within the last 3 years. Although I have done the battery load tests, I will be buying a new battery once this problem has been sorted.
 
Assuming you mean RF receiver for the fob, YWY500170 Gen 3 is actually £300.
There are other ways to address the RF interference problem which is keeping your BECM awake and flattening the battery. Unplugging the blue aerial wire, reduces the fob range, but decreases the sensitivity of the system to spurious signals is one. Another is to fit a second fob operated wireless relay in the power supply to the receiver so that it is switched off when not actually required.

Of course your problem may not be the RF receiver at all, but something else causing the current drain.

OMG.. i've just checked out the RF receiver part, and it looks identical. is it in fact the same part but called a different name?

mine sits next to the split seat button under rear quarter panel.

That's the one, make sure its the later model, think @Saint.V8 posted the photos of the insides for comparison
 
The part you posted up is the rf receiver and there are three different versions to try and overcome the battery drain issue and the only way to tell if you have the latest one is to take them apart and look at the board inside see picture

the latest one ywy500170 has a board sticking up off the main board, unfortunately there are sellers selling the older ones as the new one
for the cost of the extra remote its a very quick cheep fix and you know then it will no be woken up by weather stations broadband routers and all manor other wifi items, when I fitted mine the wifes car remote woke up the p38.

I have three interim ones.

The last one brought out by Landrover actually came out two years after they stopped making the P38 so they new all about the battery drain issue and they still charge a ransom for it when it should have been a recall item, the new one is a lot better but not fool proof.
 
The price of those RF receiver units has doubled in recent years. Land Rover really are taking the p!ss. They know damn well there's an issue and are fleecing people.

As has been said so many times on here, beware the Bay. Those f*ckers know they're selling you a dud, eveyone knows the issue.

Finally, the original generation 3 receivers had the second circuit board at right-angles but Marty says he thinks the latest batch are all on 1 board again. The only way to be sure to get the right one is to check the part number and ideally get it from somewhere reputable like RimmerBros or the Stealers.

If I'm honest I've had this problem for about 4 years, (and now that I think about it, it started when my neighbours started getting wifi internet!) and only one garage (recently) had an idea what it was... the 'alarm control module'... if I, or they had known it as the RF receiver I would have probably had it fixed sooner.

I can not believe that LR knew about this and didn't order a recall, I'm even more surprised that the Ministry of Transport didn't either!
its certainly put me off buying another Landrover, which is a shame. Can anyone hazard a guess at how much a recall would cost LR?

Anyway...

I will be looking into ordering a new part early next week and will keep you updated on its arrival.
As its my daily drive, I will be doing the quick fix, and doing a battery test to see how much V have been lost from the battery.

If you disconnect the aerial wire (blue) that will help until you get the new reciever. Spurious signals wake up the becm which thinks the car is bring tampered with so it will relock the car. In my case this was happening every few seconds so it didn't take long before the motors in both front door latches burnt out. Another £300+:eek: A £5 remote jog switch sorted it.:(
 
For the extra remote you want one on 315mhz as the lr one is 433mhz the same as most of the cheep switches, I had a look last night trawled through 18000 listings to try and find the one I fitted, this is the nearest I found
