Hi all,

I changed the rear discs and pads on my 2000 P38 4.6 at the weekend - thankfully all came loose quite easily.

Unfortunatley I had neglected to check the brakes soon enough and allowed the piston on the o/s calliper to over extend.

I had a real game pushing the piston back and had to resort to considerable force (mallet and wood at one point - not good I know!!)

I now have an ABS & TC fault appearing and wonder whether thisi is more likely to be a dislodged/damaged sensor (which may have inadvertently got in the way of my 'piston return efforts') or a failed piston not functioning?.?

Anyone had any similar experience??

Any pointers?.?

Thanks everyone :confused::confused::confused:

Piston function won't cause a fault in the ABS system....unless you are braking on a loss surface and the other wheels are retarding but that one isn't and the ABS will try not to allow the other wheels to lock up in comparison to the unbraked wheel - even then it won't through a fault....

I would say you have dislodged a sensor - push them all the way home, they will regap themselves....

A plug into read the codes would be a good move too, but most common is a dodgy sensor.

:)

Also the ABS Sensor isn't in the caliper, it is in the hub and picks up the reluctor ring attached to the Drive Shaft on the rear(?) and the CV Joint on the Front

Thanks Saint - I didn't know about e sensor until well after engaging a piece of 3x2" in/around the hub area :( - definitely 'amateur' rather than 'mechanic' - I normally get an A for effort though:)

Just put an old pad across the pistons and use a G clamp. More than likely sensor disturbed, push it back in until it touches reluctor ring. Pistons cannot cause message centre faults. Check continuity on sensor plug. If you have clipped a wire they should not be repaired. New sensor i am afraid.

Thanks Wammers - I must learn not to engage the hammer before the grey matter!!

Hi all - thanks for the very useful pointers -

I couldn't wait until the weekend and have had a fiddle about with the abs sensor - it wasn't fully engaged. I have now pushed the sensor back in fully, driven around for a few miles, and..........

Hey presto - all sorted!!!

Thanks again - easiest fix so far:D:D:D

I'm on a roll......still no prizes I guess??:D:D:D

Glad it was simple fix - top job

You are getting betterer and betterer, keep it up, you may earn a special pass to the production department brew room. You were black balled last time by Keith for taking Swarfega to swop meet instead of KY. :D:D:D

I have heard the fables of Prods tea room as being one of those places that, although it smells like a Russian shotputters jock strap - actually has a working kettle, the one in the D/O needs the button to be held down until it boils and only then if yer brave enough to not get an electric shock from it!!

I only brought the Swarfega in cos you said you needed more friction - how was I supposed to know you were talking to Keith about the clutch plates in your wifes car at the time...

After the black balling it took me two weeks to get the swelling down - when you said black balling I thought you meant the figerative meaning, not that your misses was gonna take a fecking run up with those hobnailled boots you got her last Christmas...:D

I supplied my lads with micro wave ovens a fridge and toasters not to mention the working kettle. Thinking back i was a softy really. But some would argue that point.

In the early days of Tornado we had Germans working in 302 hanger at Warton sorting out problems with their centre fuse. They had their own brew room complete with beer vending machine. That caused a bit of non-harmonic discussion i can tell you.:D:D

With that lot on offer, surprises me you Prod guys get anything done!!

I can well imagine some of those discussions :violent::fighting2::fencing::fighting::Cry::argue::mil5::mil37::mil36::mil90::mil25::mil89::mil13::mil65::mil11:

They were for use only at certain times, that's why some would argue against my softy tag. Unlike DO where the kettle is on 24/7. :D:D

I have first hand experience of your attempted deception. I had to go in there quite often to point out the error of their ways. Sometimes quite vocally if production was stopped. Trying to recreate a tea cup ring stain on a drawing is quite difficult in Dural. :D:D

Well yer see thats your first problem - Dural....

It is much easier to produce the 'Tea Stain' as you call it - it is actually a Reinforced Main Spar Attachment washer - out of the more modern CFRP composite materials.

If the RMSA Washer was made from Duralumin, the item would need to be 3 times the size and weigh 5 times as much....

And if it weighed 5 times as much and the Main Spar has 18 of these fitted, then that equates to an increase in weight that would need to be offset by not loading as much coffee on board for the Flight Crews Coffee Machine - and I'm sorry after the memo that came round the other week about the distinct lack of coffee carrying capacity - or CCC as it known in the trade - I ain't gonna risk my job on Dural for no man!!:D

Aaah. CFC the material specially invented so women and wall paperers could have jobs in the aerospace industry. :D:D:D

I thought the materials being specified by DO these days were C.R.A.P not CFRP:confused: I'm certain that is the case with LR's DO:rolleyes:
