Hiya Peeps!
On-going fiddling with my project P38. Serviced gearbox, changed leak off pipes, new lift pump, new cooling parts and radiator. Starts on the button hot or cold but still a bit sluggish on the get go? I known the diesels with an automatic box are slooooooow but I still want to reduce the fuel rate, currently showing 8-9 Mississippi on fuel ingestion and should be between 4-5. On YT, chaps used 9/32 socket bashed on to the fuel pump security nut, just wondering if the correct socket can be bought? If not, should I be using a multi point or five point 9/32 socket?

What diagnostics are you using to see the fuel flow? Do you have a "Fuel flow out of range fault"?
Nothing you do by taking the top off the FIP is going to change the fuel flow.
 
Have you checked the map pipe from the intake to the sensor on the fuel filter, if the spigot under the intake or pipe are blocked it will lack power, you can also check the sensor by pulling the pipe off and running motor if no change then there is an issue.

On both my P38's, if the MAP sensor is OK, removing the pipe makes no difference that I can detect. Both have a MAF.
 
What diagnostics are you using to see the fuel flow? Do you have a "Fuel flow out of range fault"?
Nothing you do by taking the top off the FIP is going to change the fuel flow.
Using Icarsoft, flow rate is higher than spec, not taking top off but loosening to move pump back and adjust the flow.

So you propose altering the FIP timing? That is not going to change the fuel flow. Not sure what your fuel flow measurement is but fuel quantity on my diagnostics is shown below.

Take no notice of the modulation this was with a cold engine before retiming the FIP.

Took pipe off with engine running and no change? I intend to take the plastic inlet off to complete replacement of leak off pipes due to a slight trickle of diesel near cylinders 5 and 6, might do the glow plugs at the same time for "****s and giggles" though the car starts fine. I took the egr valve off for a clean and noticed that the intake is pretty caked in gunk. Will a good clean and blow through sort the MAP blockage on intake? Turbo boost solenoid vacuum lines were toast so I have replaced those and car is pulling a bit better but foot to floor for reasonable progress!

Take the vacuum pipe off the EGR valve and block the rubber pipe with an M5 screw thus disabling EGR. Easy to put back for the MOT if needed. Saves all that gunk getting into the manifold.

Did think about blanking it off. Did that on my FIAT 1.9 and it kept everything nice and clean, no nasty thick gloop pretending to be engine oil.

No need to blank it, if the valve cannot open it amounts to the same thing, I run both mine like that just putting the pipe back for the MOT.

I've never reconnected the pipe back on mine Keith 🤔 it's been a good few years. Mind you, the pipes are in place but... 🤭
 
I got picked up on the CT, so to avoid any problem I always reconnect for the CT and disconnect round the corner afterwards.
Have you left the pipes on or do you take them off. Ours are connected but hidden under the manifold where they errm Look like they did from the factory 🤭

The pipe is there from the control valve to the EGR actuator but just not connected to the actuator. Just luck that the tester happened to notice it was not connected.
