I didn’t remove pump, just did the top and middle odd shape washers as that is where it was leaking from.

Will check everything fitted back correctly when I’m up there tomorrow.
Sounds like you may have got it back together out of position.
 
Have we eliminated the lift pump yet? Wammers did a How To in the technical section. Dead easy to check.

Could it drive as far as Aylesbury?

A previous owner has fitted a auxiliary electric pump (very crudely ! Just wires with spade connectors on plugged directly into “slots” in fuse box where relay should go.!)
Pump runs as soon a ignition on. Plenty of diesel flows through and no air in clear pipe.

Car still at garage so can’t get to it at minute which is really frustrating. Sitting here thinking of all the little things to check and can’t go do anything. I’m sure it’s something little or silly.

I now here is another “bodge” wire coming from relay slots next to pump ones. No idea where it runs too, but had to fit inline fuse back in once as it had come loose, I want to try and trace where it goes in case it goes to Fip or Map?

May go and get car back tomorrow soo com fiddle with it my self.

If no joy Grrrrrr I may well see if I can limp it to you, but don’t think driving back it that far at 15mph would do it, or me, any favours

I can see a lack of MAP causing issues. Feck only knows what it is seeing when people have been bodging. Has FIP been off since it ran correctly? When did it last run correctly?!

No its not in low, and appears to switch from high to low ok.

Wish you hadn't mentioned cornish Rattler earlier....:) i'm off to the offy now to get some liquid anaesthetic to help me stop thinking about it any more tonight, as it's driving me mad not being able to actually get to it and test things...
 
Readjust the pump head, I did mine last year and did exactly the same thing. If it is responding to the pedal then the locator pin is in place, if it is seriously lacking power when you pull away then the cap on the pump is in the wrong place by a mm or two!! Loosen and readjust it. You'll get it back. ;)

Yours was ticking over at 750rpm but in the wrong place?

I know I had a sod of a time with mine. As it was torqued down it was going out of line, hence why the tapping about with the engine running (inlet manifold off) to get it to 750rpm.

No @Grrrrrr , it runs just a little over 750 on idle but the pedal is a little sharper and the economy is the same as always. It does indeed get about when your tightening the pump cap!!:eek:

Right.....picked car up from garage this afternoon, and did indeed run awful, 20mph tops, took an age to get there and running at about 3000rpm.
But at least I had reverse back again and was able to back into my drive, which makes it easier for me to work on.

Tried adjusting Fip top with manifold on, very awkward, but just about do able (garage even lent me the special socket!) Got it running and ticking over at around 700-750, but no matter which of the four bolts I tightened last (was doing them all bit by bit and diagonally) when I did the last one it either dropped the revs and cut out (if i did one of the back ones (nearest firewall) or revs increased if I did one of the front ones?

Gave up, took everything off, took top of again, made sure everything was clean, checked and double checked pin was locating, and fitted just special bolt and diagonally opposite one. Ran car and adjusted and tightened, then refitted last two bolts, and put every thing else back on.

Moment of truth.........took it out..... and ran ok......ish. Not fast but pulled out of junctions and away from standing much better (still seems slow to me though) and pulled a lot better. Big steep hill near me, and it was sitting at 30ish and about 3000/3250 revs and sped up again as hill leveled out. On to duel carrigeway, went ok but was seriously flat out at 80mph with foot on floor. Down two junctions turned round, put in sport mode and didnt really notice any great increase in spead, but was holding gears longer. Back to normal mode, and it drove home ok, but again a bit slower than would have thought. Changes gear at about 2500 rpm.

So next question is, given I don't know any one else with one, is this normal? I know they are not sports cars, but just seems slow to me? Could aftermarket pump be failing to deliver enough fuel or is that all dealt with by the Fip?

Will check throttle adjustment etc, and now its running I'll give it a proper service and see where it stands then.

P38 diesel with HP24 gearbox? @ovalandrover has the same setup so can advise.

Should be rock solid 750rpm at tickover. Pump top can be a total bar-steward. That's for certain.

Don't know about the auto but the manual can sit on any autobahn at 90mph and go over a hundred when pushed. Obviously not on British roads. That would be illegal.
 
What number do you have on your FIP?
Write it down for us - are you sure it’s a P38 one o_O

This is what’s on it, it was done by a garage (allegedly) for previous owner about 18mths ago)

Will determine if lift pump is okay - even if it’s new if they got crap in there somewhere as they are stinking things could be blocked etc - also tells if fuel filter is blocked if you check after that point. Cheap tank pumps don’t last long at all on these
