Well that's what I'm thinking. Instead of wedging it in could I not hold the roll of newspaper and press it against the fan until it stops. Their's probably no need to hold it until it reaches temperature, is there?

You don't wedge it. You very slowly and gently touch the edge of the blades. If hot it will make a nasty noise and try to shred it. If warm it will slowly come to a stop.

And why are your underpants covered in mustard again sir?….

In all seriousness I’m unsure he knows what the hell we are on about how to check a vcu, but I’m with grrr in that it’s an E36 version or similar, which may not be as appropriate anyhow. If there are issues and he has AC id probably go with the Datatek mod if I were him.

I will let you know what happens. Probably. Which prybar is best for the tensioner. I've just ordered a 36" Inch prybar?

The fulcrum tensioner? Largish screwdriver maybe - be gentle they can snap- trick is slow steady -straight (no twisting) - pressure then the elbow will release without wangling it. Snap that whole world of trouble

When you get the belt off check the idler pulleys by turning them by hand. Should be free with no grinding or excessive play
