Fan exchanged in shop...Was told by the man on.counter that it won't be a dodgy fan and it must be my head gasket or cracked head ...he swooped it anyway and left me with hump....even said that the baffle don't matter in the rad ...he did try to blame my rad when I phoned but caught a blank when I said I only bought one from him 2weeks ago....Think I'll start going somewhere else for my spares...got the impression from him....that I was wrong and he was right...also told by him ...u can't sniff test a head on a m51 engine ...let's.hope I.just Chuck fan on and it all goes well....now to find a decent supplier of spares...any recommendations...cheers people...I'll update tonight after I done some work on it
As I said before, you can use the aircon fans for cooling.

Good news ....my viscous fan now works and u can hear it roar...drove for over a hour,up n down hills with great pleasure ...as engine was cooling lovely and as it should now....bad news...stopped for 5mins to do some shopping ...turned key drove 200m and temp went up to near red ,then come down again ....Had enough now of this problem ....thinking to myself now ...it's cracked head or head gasket....got proper ball ache and miseries....quoted 270 to do it ,if it's just head gaskets...cheap if it is ...and mechanical said add another 100 quid if it needs a skim ....anyone wanna buy a bmw 320d to fund my p38 resurrection

Head should NOT be skimmed.

Have you tried running it without the stat in? Cannot remember if you'd said you'd replaced it or not. Britpart are a fiver so worth a shot as a test before you give up.

I read that it..it should not be skimmed in rave ..but why do all eBay recon ones and mechs say it...if it has to be done ...are the tolerences and stresses to much then for the cylinder head once it's warped to be skimmed

I'll take stat out today....my one is working at Mo tho..gona flush it thru one more time with hoses...and back flush matrix as well....trying to find some sort of pipe to replace heater one on back of engine as it's rusty as hell..also might swop expansion with a scrappy one ,just to rule that out ...worth a go before I spend out last of my savings....one mechanical wants 270...another wants 750....making me wonder now ,why so cheap and why so expensive....

Did you check for the radiator baffle?

The head is already weak, a skim just ensures it will fail. Head gasket failure is less common than a cracked head but if it was OK until you stopped it does not sound like a cracked head to me. If the expansion tank is not holding pressure or the cap is NBG it will boil.

Yeah my rad has a baffle.....expansion tank has new cap althought, the tank looks like it's seen better days...

Ok that took some time to establish. Next thing is remove stat and run without it for a time, check that it is opening properly out of the car. If it is you maybe looking at cracked head. Best advise is NEVER fit a cheap stat. If the head isn't cracked it soon will be if you continue as is.

Ok bro.thank you ...just went down n.checked expansion tank...awful damp underneath it ...mmmm..I got Harwood across the road ...maybe I'll.change that to.be sure to be sure and take stat out ....

P.s.this is my second stat...it's bmw oem one ...first one was britpart, and one that came with 4x4 was a motor rad...sorry I took my time ,I have a new born ,so only have certain amount of time to sort rangey ...

Unlikely to be stat then, but you never know. It's starting to sound a bit ominous. Do you know anyone with a static test rig?

Cheers Pete ...just done that ...didn't wanna put anyone out and make em come over ,but I do need help on this problem

Hi my p38 dse dose the same i changed pump thermostat and rad after driving 40 odd miles it was ok, on way home hot again found air lock in rad and small amount of water coming out of over flow so i fitted a new bottem seal on rad cap seems ok at moment , i think the water loss gives a air lock and stops wate going round engine
