Went for good 1hour n half drive, hit some traffic ,hit some traffic lights,no temp raise ....got home ,Sat on idle for good 20mins...just about to get out and thought I'd stay for 5more mins...and temp gauge started to climb just before red....all hoses were hot as they should be ...but fan looks like it wasn't doing it's job,I'm going to take it.back to island 4x4 and hopefully change it ....I thought it would have more kick as the temp was just before red ....with engine off I can turn it with only slight resistance, goes round maybe 7inches or so when u grab blade and free turn it....unhappy bunny cost me 118quid ...I'm going to put some self tappers in my old fan ,and go for same drive tomorrow before I take it back ,just to be sure ...I heard 2screws in front face of fan should lock it in fast position...so running cool all the time ....

DO NOT lock the fan. Fan locks by centrifugal force acting on the fluid in it. So you will be able to turn it with engine stopped even when hot.

Just a footnote, my 96 with a cracked head would idle for hours and pootle around no problem, put your foot down or show it a hill and it would boil in no time.

If he was touching cloth before he's now touching sock.

No overheat until today again ....20miles,up n down big hills,no problems...Sat behind a tractor for 5mins and temp when red ,then light came on ....pulled up ...Let it cool, noticed slight water out of expansion cap...5mins cool down ,found a gap in traffic ...temp went straight down ...then held 11 o'clock on gauge..stopped after 30mins drive home ...temp went up a touch ...mrs gave me newspaper and said ..see if u can stop fan while temp going ....sure enought a flimsy 10 page .newspaper rolled up,stopped it ...my old viscous fan had metal plate on front ,and this new one has bi metallic coil ...What's the difference between the two of em ...and is my fan screwed then...

It would seem so. Is the rad getting hot all over if not the fan will not work?

Brand new from island 4x4....Gona take it back Tomorrow, they seem like good blokes and get replacement..it's say oem quality....I would prefer actual oem for the price I payed...

Rad seems ok and warm to hot all over...the rad doesn't get so hot u can't touch it tho

Before you take the fan back do the check for the rad baffle. It is heat from the rad that controls the viscous fan. No heaty no worky. If it is showing over heat and blowing coolant out and you have proper circulation the rad should be untouchable ANYWHERE.

Cheers..I'll do.school run in morning and take it up few hills and around town and get it sweating ...and have a check ....New rad as well.....Will they take it back if the baffle is missing ...??* as it's not correct..

You should have checked that before you fitted it. It's been mentioned on here often enough. Won't work properly without the baffle. There have been lots of new rads supplied recently with it missing.

Didn't think to check as I read nissens ones from island 4x4 are the good ones...it's all experience...Should have known better tho seeing as I work on cars non stop...never had a overheat problem like this ...I bet it's the rad now I think about it...I'll let u all know the outcome...peace out x

They are supposed to be ok but check it then it is another thing not to worry about. Fault finding is a process of elimination. Maybe you do have a duff fan i don't know but you also need to know if the rad has a baffle. Do you not know anyone with an endoscope?

Or a marble.:)

If it stays cool going up hills and whist moving, I would say the RAD is OK as the airflow from the car moving is keeping it cool. It overheats when you hit the traffic as there is no airflow and there is always residual heat to disperse.
My aircon fans mod would probably sort things out.

Rad gets nice n hot all over.....fan doesn't kick in and my expansion tank looks like it's on its last leg lol nice... ...does a v8 expansion tank fit ,coz there's a v8at our local scrappie....Christ trying to talk to island4x4 is mad...proper busy lads down there ....nightmAre...at least we now know it's the fan not working people....also Gina drill a hole in my thermo as advised when I.change fan....thanks people...

Fan exchanged in shop...Was told by the man on.counter that it won't be a dodgy fan and it must be my head gasket or cracked head ...he swooped it anyway and left me with hump....even said that the baffle don't matter in the rad ...he did try to blame my rad when I phoned but caught a blank when I said I only bought one from him 2weeks ago....Think I'll start going somewhere else for my spares...got the impression from him....that I was wrong and he was right...also told by him ...u can't sniff test a head on a m51 engine ...let's.hope I.just Chuck fan on and it all goes well....now to find a decent supplier of spares...any recommendations...cheers people...I'll update tonight after I done some work on it
