Unfortunately my Crystal ball is a bit hazy today so I can't see what vehicle and engine we are talking about.

As we are shooting in the dark, the p0170 code refers purely to the fuel mixture (air/fuel ratio) but without stating which way it's going.

p0171 is mixture to lean and P0172 is too rich.

Are there any symptoms that can help identify the fault as the list of causes is quite long.

Intake air leaks, vacuum leak, Exhaust gas leaks, oxygen sensor, Ignition misfiring (dizzy, coil, spark plug etc), Faulty fuel injectors, Incorrect fuel pressure/Lack of fuel (faulty fuel pump, blocked fuel filter, faulty pressure regulator), Faulty Maf sensor. It can even be cam or crank sensor faults in some cases.

as a first port of call I'd scan the engine with a diagnostic pooter as the live data readings should help narrow down if it's a maf or o2 sensor fault or egr valve etc.

sorry its a freelander mk1,,,so far ive changed the o2sensor, map sensor, plugs, coils, leads, air filter, getting erratic idel took it to a garage today they said they could smell petrol they are going to plug it in to there computer tomorrow....ive took it to landrover and they cant get there computer to read my computer.....

1.8 or 2.5?

When you say 'erratic' do you mean hunting (revving up and down) or running rough/lumpy?

it does it all the time

i'd start off looking for an air or vacuum leak.

I take it there's no sign of overheating, loss of coolant, oil and water mixing, coolant system over pressurising etc?

it is lossing coolant and there is a gasket failure where the manifold meets the down pipe but garage said the cant fix exhaust until running problem is sorted

Has the engine been sniff or pressure tested for head gasket failure?

i dont know..

I'd be doing that pretty sharpish.

If you're driving a 1.8 k series engine with a coolant leak you are asking to have your arse severely rogered by the garage without the prospect of any lube.:eek::eek:

garage is doing a diagnostic tomorrow...but it has been to another garage but i dont know if they did a sniff test or pressure test
