as least on yours you see the problem. not so easy on mine.

I am taking the head to a workshop to plan it.

so I will be hopefully good with it.

The 300 is a git to bleed, and some leaks only show when up to pressure, this includes the heater matrix and it's plumbing, dust with talc and follow the water tracks that will have evaporated otherwise ...

Just to keep you all informed, the head is in the shop. I should get it back this week. Work will start on it by the 18th of December (not much time before)

And as I present to myself, we have booked the car into the viking rally in march

Just a bit more info. The head has been reviewed by the shop down the road and pressure tested. All good and they scrape only a bit. So next Monday I will update you if my parcel clear the custom.

Looks pretty clear where combustion has been getting to the coolant. Going back to gauge/sender you need the right sender to match your gauge. If the vehicle was always a 300tdi then you dont need to worry about this

The fuel filter being mounted off the bulkhead indicates a engine swap.

To the OP -

If you're going to start swapping bits, you need a sender with the black band, as you can't get defender style gauges to match the disco green band sender. Then a defender gauge, as people generally just leave the original gauge in place and then it reads wrong with the black band sender.... But you can't use the original sender in the 300 as the thread is different.

But this is all by the by, it has probably been like that for ages with (possibly) the wrong setup and this seems a new issue (i think the old gauge with the new sender reads about a third too hot too, which is probably better than reading too cold!)

have you refitted your head? what Was the outcome? im having similar issues
Dear All,

Yes the head is refitted and no more overheating. The guys have been towing 3.5t for a full day without problem. But as it is a Landy the trip finished on the tow truck. I discovered that the alternator cable had burned. Now replaced and it looks fine.

Now I am doing some other bits of maintenance for the coming Viking rally in Norway.

That’s always the way! I’m waiting on a sniff test kit then depending on outcome of that a 2nd water pump in 6months or head off
