have you noticed that the price of rads has gone up by about £50-£75 recently- I guess the copper prices have finally filtered through :doh:

Not much copper in a modern rad, mostly alluminium and plastic:)
 
Does the viscous coupling get its heat to lock up the clutch from the radiator or from the motion of turning?
Reason im asking is the radiator is cold around the center so there will be little heat around the coupling

There's a bit of an echo in here....in here...

Gets it's heat from the engine block.... I think

Not sure if there's a better or safer test other than the rolled up news paper stuck in the blades.

Carefully (obviously) once the engine is up to normal operating temperature if the news paper stops the fan its buggered.

forgot to add sounds like your rads blocked

Just read through all the posts and Jame told you it would be the radiator if it wasn't warm evenly all the way across ages ago.

Stop buggering about with the fan.

Yea i know the rads ****ed ive bought a new one gona fit over the weekend but im not sure if thr viscous coupling ****ed too as even when at normal temp i can still stop the fan but is that because most of the radiators cold and its not getting any heat
 
i would do both to be safe mate , its pennies compared to a new engine and you have done well not to kill it yet- dont push your luck!

it only seems to get hot when towing or when i thrash it and with the price of fuel now thats not often lol
but i only drive about 3 miles to and from work so dont realy get chance to get that hot anyway

Heat from the RAD operates the viscous.
 
Hi, i have had this problem with my range rover. Took rad off and flushed it, put it back but no better. I had people telling me the head was gone as water was boiling out the header tank. I fitted a new radiator and it was fine. Also you could try putting your thermostat in a cup of boiling water, if it does not open you need a new one. Hope this helps

thermostats fine. tested it! pressure tested the cylinders too so heads ok:D
