Thought any water damage and insurance write it off.

Not necessarily, if it's salt water or potentially contaminated like effluent or sewage as happens in floods then yes, but sometimes with clean fresh water it might depend on the extent of damage. In the case of total submersion like this then I would think total loss every time.

Yeah .. and this weekend, all being well, it'll be at my house, so I'll have a reasonable bargaining tool.

After all .. it's still my vehicle ... ;)

Now, the only time we've had a written-off car (officially) was our lass' Corsa and she just took what they offered, it was a ****ty little thing and we made quite a bit on it .. but I'm pretty naive, I think, with respect to insurance. Am I right to think it's better to have the 'written off' vehicle at my house, or would it be better at a 'neutral' place for assessment etc?

I'm worried that 'things' I made that are unique, like the steering guard winch-mount, and winch, might walk, but don't really know my rights.

Is it likely that as I have it home they'll not offer as much?

Any ideas for getting a decent valuation?

Not interested in making (too much!) money, just want a proper, fair, assessment.

far as i'm aware, its your motor till you accept what they offer.

personally, i'm tpf&t, so i'd want it on my premises regardless.

Deffo better at home, went through this a few years ago with a car (crashed not flooded), as soon as they get their hands on it, it will go to somewhere like Universal Salvage and you'll never see it again. If its at home, you can insist that they inspect it on site etc.

In terms of valuation, prepare your case as much as possible in advance, lists of everything, any receipts you have, photos of work done, the more paperwork the better. Reject the 1st offer they give unless it is too good to be true.

Anything that's salvageable and you don't want as part of the claim, but not a core part of the vehicle, i'd remove before they see it

paul i doubt they will even come to asses it, they will start with an offer based on book price, if they have the vehicle they wil deduct storage fees from the final offer. you are far better having the vehicle in your possesion, you would be supprised how many vehicles go missing after being writen off, you then cant prove condition or accessories.

anywhere else will incure a £12.50 per night storage charge, they will want to avoid this so will assess and scrap/sell the car straight away, point out to them that you have avoided this and the recovery charge

realisticly what will they offer? £1000 and keep the salvage?

Yeah defo get it taken home otherwise all the decent bits will go missing. It will make no difference to the claim.

Yeah get it home and keep it there.

What they said. Avoid the storage fees.

Get the home made bits off. Have you or anyone else got a crap winch you could put on it? keep your warn and the stealth mount.

Cheers, thought it would be best getting it home rather than a yard somewhere. Yeah, transport is being arranged.

what he said, plus, just what bits are/were covered on your insurance,
only ask as it was pointed out by a mate on a motor claim that "anything" other than standard was "not covered"
stickers included.
be aware mate. check your fine print carefully..
good luck.

Good luck with the outcome, Paul!

Any idea if you have comeback with the local highway authority due to there being no signs/depth gauges etc.??

Bloody flippin eck . Only just found and read this thread.
Pretty much same as everyone else has to say mate. Glad ur ok and hope you get ur disco back ok.

Only just finished reading this thread from start to finish. Could have happened to anyone....glad you came out alright and as gutting as it is and I know it has been said already you can get your truck repaired or another, at least your alive to tell the tale.

Deffo get it out ASAP before any of those caravan liviing folk find it.

I'd also back up what everyone else said on here. Don't let the insurance company take the car away from you. They took my brothers 306 after it was written off (yes it was only a sub £500 car) but he never saw it again nor did he see any money for it and in the end just gave up with the insurance company. He would have been better off financially breaking it then weighting the rest in looking back (I did however manage to syphon 50 litre of diesel out of it).

Sounds like you have your team lined up for the recovery, but if you need any help I am more than willing.

I'm fairly sure if they write it off as flood damaged, then it can only be sold to a registered breakers who have to break it as it can not be put back on the road. So i think there is a good chance you wouldnt be able to buy it back. So if they have it you migt not see it again.
If you have it they may not pay out till you hand it over, but at least you can remove all the bits not included before handing it over
