Ok, so that didn't go quite as planned...

So I took the bolts out, then disconnected the front of the shaft. The gasket took a long time to remove with a hammer and screw driver. As I removed that a lot of oil like liquid ran out and went everywhere.

I then cut the metal clip and tried to remove the bearings after removing the circlip. And failed.

So after a lot of swearing I decided to put it back together with proper grease in without swapping the gaiter. So hopefully it won't leak with the correct grease in.

I also only had a jubilee clip, will that be ok, or will it unbalance the prop?

Oh, and I didn't see the message about marking where the cup was before, what problems could it cause if I didn't put it back on right?

That oils started out as grease, I re did mine about 20k ago and then recently when taking it off it was an oil like consistency again.

The clip will no cause an issue if you ask me. I don't think they are all that balanced in the first place and have never observer re fitting in the same place with no ill effect

I'm sure some one on here had a source of those boots?

I used a three legged puller to remove the tripode from the shaft. You risk killing it and needing a new front propshaft if you try using a hammer to knock it off.

After remembering to slide the gaiter onto the shaft, clean and lubricate the spines, then the tripode can be tapped back into place with an appropriate size socket.

Details from here about the CV boot kit for Freelanders. If using the Dave Mac sourced boot kit leave about a 15mm gap between point where the propshaft narrows to end of gaiter where circlip goes, to allow enough slack in the boot for fore and aft travel. These gaiters are shorter than the LR originals.
