Well at last some better news, my local main dealer came out and reprogrammed it again with their laptop. Loony was there but the guy said the code was still there but he took it out and back again and it started fine. He tried disconnecting the battery and back on again and it started so maybe it was the length of time it was off, but anyway £90 lighter but that's a third of what it would cost me to try and get it trailered again.
Anyhoo, I only had 9.5 litres of ATF and it still wanted more but a quick drive around the block and loony tells me all was good so far. He also fixed a minor hose water leak.
Stand by for more detail when I'm back

Thanks Gents, I am really pleased there is no sign of oil leaks right now. Car has been up to running temps and sounds sweet. No selection trouble, everything is smooth.

I have to hold back a little though as until this car has done a 100 miles or more trouble free, I won't be completely satisfied.

Looking forward to getting it through all the gears on a decent run. Should be all ready for that Wednesday night.
 
mmm, well I will support andy if we get more trouble, whatever it takes. I wouldn't want to do one on a drive outdoors again to be honest.

It would have to be indoors and at a comfortable working height with plenty of clean space and no time limits. I have been a mechanic all my life and I don't enjoy roughing it anymore and the stress of having to get things done by a deadline, just cant do it mentally.
 
From a technical point of view it isn't actually that hard a job. Obviously Phil did the complex work on the valve block, but I reckon anyone with a half decent tool kit and regular old common sense could do it in a reasonable amount of time.

I wouldn't even have attempted this in the first place without a manual so that has made a huge difference. The amount of work we have completed has cost a lot of money though, I don't think that could be reduced much at all. But like we have been saying "what cost is enjoyment from something".

Something else is I wouldn't trust anyone else that I didn't know to go to the lengths we have to try and get it right. The labour costs would be seriously expensive. Much better doing it yourself.

After taking it for a quick spin, I can see why people enjoy these cars so its well worth the effort to keep it running nice.
 
I'm missing mine something hellish,,, only thing that underwhelmed me was **** trim, tad firm ride and lack of variable RATIO steering,
 
And i would have done box myself if it went, albeit by following a manual and sending cake and beer to bemble the great...
 
If it was down to me doing it on my own I wouldn't have had a chance
I think I was extremely fortunate having the combination of loony and Phil doing most of the spannering and technical support. I'm not even sure Phil is real, its like whatever you ask him, he has the answer along with a photo and manual extract, we could be tapping into some higher power !
I am glad we didn't have to touch the valve block as there is probably more parts in that than the rest of the box, fortunately Phil did all that for nothing, there is no way we would have considered starting the project without his advice
I think if we needed to get it done to a deadline it would have been unbearable

Like loony says we need a few more miles under our belt first and there is no way a normal AT Specialist would have replaced all the extra little faults we found that all took time, even if it was just waiting for parts.
I'll admit a few times I doubted what we were doing even at the start with the ramps but I have total trust in loony, I can't imagine doing what we did with four axle stands on a block pathing drive, feck that ..
I don't think anything was really difficult but knowledge is power, but then I generally made the coffee when the swearing from under the wagon got too much..

Is it possible to read the gearbox oil temperature in All comms software?

I read that if the cooler pipes are warm then the valves are open and the oil is flowing properly to get the correct level.
 
Another question is does any one have a wiring diagram with wire colours for the engine bay loom M62 4.4V8?

And a Fusebox layout with fuse descriptions and positions?

And yet more, when searching around top of engine I found that there seems to be a small fuel leak on the right hand bank rear cylinders, is there a weak point to investigate?

looks like fuel rail to injectors weeping.

As for injectors, seems like one of the o-rings is culprit, i would just de-pressurise rail at shraeder valve, undo rail mountings partialy and give it a wiggle up and down, you never know,it might reseal, although for proper peace of mind its rail off and fit new o-rings x8.
