I'm trying to find out what the ex-factory specification for "rubber" loadspace matting was for my 2002MY Defender 90 Station Wagon.

1) was the original loadspace mat simply a floor covering, leaving the wheel boxes bare, or was there wheel box matting too?

2) I have recently bought an OE loadspace mat (part no. STC4629) which covers both the loadspace floor AND the sides and top of the wheel boxes (a bit like a panty-liner with wings). In your opinion and experience, should this new mat be cut to fit AROUND the side-bench base-frame OR should the new mat be fitted UNDER the side-bench base-frame? (I notice from pictures that the County Station Wagon loadspace carpets are fitted UNDER the side-bench base-frames).

I know that loadspace mats aren't exactly the most scintillating of conversation pieces but any feedback would be very gratefully received.

I am about as far from an expert as you can get but I think you would put it under the side bench mounts.

The reason you haven't got any replies is probably the fact that noone actually knows the answer.

I thought it was strange when at my local LR dealership, I ordered the "panty-liner" loadspace mat, along with a semi-rigid loadspace liner, the parts salesman said he'd not sold either item to anyone before!

You'll also find a design flaw in the panty-liner, in that after about 6 months it'll start to split along the upper edges of the wheel boxes.

To avoid this get a long strip of rubber, or an old inner tube or sommat and a tube of vulcanising jelly (like you get in a puncture repair kit) and glue the rubber along the inside of this corner. If not it will fail due to the thinnest rubber being at the point of most stress! Once it starts, it'll detach itself in quick fashion.

The're nice bits of kit though - I like the big landy sign.

Thank you muddy, that is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for - invaluable!

I shall hunt down the required additions (rubber and glue) and attach to the weak folds before fitting to the vehicle.

You seem emphatic about "under" the seats; is this from personal experience?

I knew there had to be a reason why I was making excuses to myself, NOT to fit the liner this evening - I'd have missed your message and created twice the amount of work.

I think deep down, the only reason I bought the liner was because of the big Landy sign - but I think I'll keep that one quiet.

How much was the rubber 'panty liner' Buck?

I vinyled mine with some off cuts from work but it looks a bit naff as the vinyl was black glittery stuff

£72.47 Dude you could carpet a bedroom for that. The land rover super market in speke (liverpool) sell the rubber flooring on a roll it's about £10 a meter and of similar quality and cos it costs so little it does not bother you when it gets wrecked or dirty

ps it don't say land rover though

i got some marine grade grey carpet in the back of mine. looks and feels awesome ive also got a rubber mat to put down in the main loadspace if needed.

the carpet was spare and free from my flatmate doing the inside of his VW transporter joy.

careful with that large land rover logo on the mat. sometimes when you drag things over it, it (the load gets caught by the uneveness of the logo) can tear the mat. i used to have that very nice piece of mat on my SIII.

Yes, they flop over the wheel arches and the benches or seats are supposed to mount on top of them. horrors of horrors, you need to poke holes in them for the bolts.

Yes, they tear eventually where they fold, so it's good to have some re-inforcement behind them. oh it's still cheaper than what it is going for in singapore.

so what we do here is we just buy 'chequed plated' rubber mats which are like 3mm thick and cut them to fit and paste them down.

Hi achuakh

I remember hitching into Singapura from Malaysia and being made to get my hair cut before they'd let me in..... and it was still too long at some places; at government agencies, like the PO, if you had long hair, you had to go to the back of the queue.

Thanks for your loadspace mat advice. I'm debating whether or not to cut around the seat belt anchor brackets (attached to the top of the wheel boxes) or put the mat under - regret it may have to be the former.
