It's normal for the TC to kick in on full lock and slippery ground also if the bump is ''agressive'' it's not unusual if a wheel or both are in the air for a second or the load is removed from them a bit... are the tyres standard dimension and same wear?

I believe the wheels are: 18 inch LR alloys with 255/55/18 tyres. The drive is gravel / compacted earth (not really sliippery) and none of the other cars, of which one other is a full time 4x4 with TC has this happen. Not that this is any real indicator, I know.

When it happened on the road it was just a small bump, nothing aggressive, and certainly nothing like the one I was aiming at to try and provoke it (and would certainly have done yesterday).

But, if this sounds like normal behaviour for a Disco 2, then I'll leave well alone :)
 
as i said the system is very sensitive and can act strangely even if the hubs/sensors are different brands/wear, what you can do more is to remove each sensor ansd see if they all have the o-ring...important is all 4 to have it or not, tap each sensor gently but firmly with a rubber hammer then tighten the screw

Thanks again Sierrafery, I'll take a look at them over the weekend. Any issues with squirting magic mending juice (WD40) all over them?
 
can't hurt but won't help either, impotant is that the sensors to be well seated as the air gaps to reluctor ring to be equal
 
I too have had the 'grinding' type noise, seemingly only when the left wheel is dropped off a kerb or similar. Lots of googling seemed to indicate that if the TC itself is working, it's best left alone. (Disclaimer, this is based on lots of other opinions, I cannot offer definitive fact, however mine works fine left alone)

I guess one sure way to test my TC is to put it in a position of forcing it to operate. I know a lane nearby that has a few berm like obstacles on it. If I approach it right I bet I can it to trigger, or not. Said lane is a BOAT and I won't be veering off it to test - all responsible like :)
