Hello all. Just got my car back from the garage after getting a second hand engine fitted. However since its back the car uses about twice the amount of fuel of the old engine, however doesnt smoke. Also, the torque has basically vanished. If im in top gear and go up a hill as little as 15 degrees the car begins to slow despite my foot being planted nearly through the floor.

Any ideas on where to start? I plan on fitting a new intercooler and getting the pump tuned.

Also, i have a boost gauge fitted fitted in the pipe between the turbo and the pump and it displays 1.2 bar of boost in higher gears and i can hear it whistle.

Did the garage who fitted the engine also supply it - if so, take it back to them and tell them to sort it.

Sorry i have no history on the engine. and my dad sourced the engine and supplied it to the garage. Oh well, looks like i'll need to put it into a diesel tuning centre and see what happens

would start with a new cam belt.
would you be doin it or a garage?

Nah, i'll let a garage do it (not the same one that fitted the engine) if i get a garage to do it then i have someone to shout at when it goes pete tong :)

Yeh someone mentioned at work earlier that the timing may be out enough to allow the car to run but could explain the lack of torque.

Cheers
Chris

i hate that type of thinking. what you gonna say if this faults nowt to do with the cambelt?feel sorry for any garage in your area.might be summat daft and simple like the throttle cable not pulling injector lever fully across.ok, so if the garage bend all your pushrods after doin belt, shout by all means.but dont go with the assumption that changing the cambelt will sort it.

Split/loose turbo hose or leaking intercooler.

I notice you live on The Black Isle, I've been visiting there on holiday for the last 35 years you luck sod :D Where abouts are you.

Im not making the assumption that the cam belt will fix it. i just mean i dont trust myself to work on the timing and i have a comeback if the engine goes bang as a result of incorrect timing. I dont literally shout at garages.

And i live near Fortrose.
