Borneo TD5

New Member
Hi,

Purchased my 2000 TD5 in September last year with about 100,000km on the clock... Had to send it back to the dealer less than 2 weeks later for over heating problem.

Found out it was a stuck thermostat and had it replaced but the problem was still there (power was still ok at this stage)... Found out the gasket had been damaged and they performed a top overhauled... And this is when the "fun" started... the truck just refused to move beyond idle even when we had the pedal all the way down while in gear... the engine however will rev when its not in gear (slight delay thou). The Air mass sensor have since been replaced but the problem is still there...

They also suspected that the problem may be caused by oil seeping into the wiring and into the ECU but a replacement ECU didn't help either...

Any suggestion would be much appreciated...

Thanks

ok... here's some update... took the Disco out of the workshop for a drive just now... its not actually stuck at idle but does feel sluggish... The acceleration is not good even for a diesel and gear change can be weird...

Sometimes it would be ok while other times the engine would rev but the car is still slow while the gear won't change up until much later (3000rpm+ or sometimes when I suddenly release the accelerator...)

Had the oil soaked wiring loom replaced but it's still like that...

Could it be the gear box or is there something wrong with the engine...

Did notice a blade on the fan is chipped (about 1" x 0.5")... Could that have produced too much vibration thus causing the problem?

Any suggestion would be much appreciated...

Hi

Cleaning the MAP sensor on mine made a big difference. It would rev out much better after doing this. It's on the inlet manifold. It's a black plug held with 2x 8mm bolts. It could be gunged up with oil. A spray with electrical contact cleaner should sort it if it's dirty. It's a very easy 15 min job.

Cheers

Andy

I had this same problem, lost water, overheated, went into 'get me home mode', head gasket replaced, but no power at all, local inde who did head gasket was puzzled, took it somewhere else and what had happened was the plastic insert in the injecters had melted and restricted there performance, so you got a great tick over and will rev fine but under load (driving) nothing, barely moved wheels so you think its gear box next or engine managment etc.

Local Inde (another one) put recon injecters in and boy what a difference.

only trouble is that was 18 months ago and im puffing smoke again so i think head gasket has gone again.

Good luck

Pulled the MAP sensor out and indeed covered in oil... cleaned it but still no luck... injectors checked previously and they're fine...

One other symptom is that the engine response seems to lag behind when i was platying with the pedal while not in gear... :frusty:

Update....

Noticed that the turbo waste gate (or whatever its called) is not moving much...

Could this be the problem?

it normally wont if your just revving it while stationary as they'd be next to no load on it - can you hear or feel the turbo kick in when your booting it out on the road ?

does it have a throttle position sensor? what i was told was the waste gate doesnt move alot when car is ticking over only when its moving and under load no amount of revving whilst stationary will make it move.

It sounds a little like fuel starvation, have you checked the fuel filter? Also do these later ones suffer the corosion issues on the pick up pipes?

Nope... There's no throttle position sensor and the fuel filter is clean...

Can't really feel the turbo kicking in on the road when i floor it so will check the boost level next...

A separate issue... I was told that the EGR valve will remain close if the vacuum pipe is removed so wouldn't that have the same effect as blanking it off?

As for the reving when you depress the clutch when driving it sounds to me like the sensor in the clutch line could be duff can you stall it in first?

Turbo seems ok with 0.8 bar at 4,000rpm (neutral)....

as for the clutch cable.... mine's an auto so can't be that... ;-)

try unplugging the MAF sensor and then driving it. Does it make any difference?

Unplugged the MAF (Mass Air Flow just after the air filter?) this morning and no difference....

what could be the problem? I did not take it for a drive thou... just started the engine and revving there...

You really do need to plug it in on a diagnostic, otherwise you are shooting in the dark.

Is there any smoke out the exhaust at any point? If so what colour?

I think you should start going through a process of elimination. Fuel system - fuel High Pressure and Low Pressure is in the tank. There is also a gauze filter in there. HP should deliver 4.0 bar, controlled by a fuel pressure regulator. Has this been checked and have all the pipes delivering the fuel been inspected? Once that has been done and , as you say, it has a new fuel filter, then fuel side can be eliminated.

Best do that first.

Sensors - there are a variety of sensors that can be checked. You stated that there was no throttle position sensor fitted? According to Rave there should be! Check down by your throttle pedal. Worth double checking - I'm sure other peeps on here will confirm if any TD5 was made without a TP sensor ?????????????

Your probs started after HG change? Are you sure that the engine timing has been double checked and is correct? If you are satisfied, this can be eliminated.

check your fuel system and revert ok?
