Nipples? Yep, been greasing mine this afternoon (on the P38) and after that I got carried away and put a litre (yes, a full litre) of oil in the front axle....that'll be why its sounded rough since I got the thing. My question is 'What fluid to put in the manual gearbox and transfer box?'. I ask because there are the obligatory drips on the bottom of both boxes and it smells, looks and feels suspiciously like gear oil. Will this need replaced with the fluids as specified or will EP75/90 be OK to top up with?

Yeah, thats where I got my info from but my local factors isn't able to cross reference Texaco MTF 94 or ATF Dextron III. Can anyone recommend alternative brands/grades 'cos I'm gonna drain and refill both to be on the safe side.

GSF carparts do dextron 3 @ £4.50+ vat per litre.

dextron 2 will do they ran it fot years okay my auto box is 22 years old basically same as yours and still works

thats great, thanks but at the risk of sounding really thick can I use Dextron 2/3 in both the gear and transfer boxes?

Just a word of warning, Dextron 3 is a different oil to dextron 2 and I personally dont think it cross referances, Im not sure if its compatible with certain oil seals etc...

If you're not sure what was last used, drain what you can (only about 2/3 of total) and refill with Dextron 3 - later, higher spec than 2.

Thats certainly the line I'm looking at going down.....Will dextron 3 be ok in both the gear and transfer boxes?

You're right to question your comment.

The evo 1 for the gearbox really does make gear changes so smooth, esp when cold in a morning.

It's very good stuff and lasts.

The question perhaps should be, how much do you care about the heavy stuff under the car you own?

It's not quite the same as frequent engine oil changes.

It's not quite the same as frequent engine oil changes.

At that price it should change gears for you. Not required, a bit like designer jeans or trainers. Fashionable and expensive seems to be the way forward for some. OK for really high stress motors, but not needed in a Range Rover. Normal oil changed on a regular basis is quite acceptable.

£120 to put the best synthetic oil in for 50k miles is in no way costly. Each to their own.

What's in this oil that makes it so expensive? Sounds like a load of bull. Even BMW auto box fluid doesn't cost that much, not even from the main stealer!
What properties has it over the standard fill?

I paid about £120 a few years ago to replace all the fluids in the gearbox, transfer box and both diffs in a P38 I had.

It's not a nice job and according to the manufacturer it lasts twice the regular gear.

I also noticed a big improvement in gear selection. It was well worth it.

No need to freak out!

You didn't have those little magnets on your fuel lines and notice a vast improvement in fuel consumption also by any chance did you? If you choose to use fully synthetic oil you can get it a lot cheaper than that. You can get strawberries from a barrow boy just as good as the ones you pay a fortune for in Harrods. As i said total waste of money reading and believing snake oil adverts.
