Hi
I have never used a forum before but I am looking for some help please. My husband passed away recently and always dealt with the cars.
We have a 3 yr old (end of this month) Disco 4 and I have taken it in for a service today. Wow very expensive. Anyway I have been told the car needs new pads discs and something to do with the handbrake. The car has only done 17,500 miles - does this sound right. I have not got a clue. Been told it will cost £750?

Guidance wanted please as its stressing me out

Pity about the circumstances in which you found us.
Its a great place for info

I take it you took your Discovery to a Main Land Rover Dealer, if so take it the parts required are no longer covered by any sort of warranty.

If you plan on keeping your Discovery, you need to find a reliable Independant Land Rover garage and shy away from Main Stealers, thery have nice showrooms to pay for!
Don't know where you are roughly located, which might give someone on here an idea of the best garage to head for.

New discs & pads at only 17500 miles would normally be unusual. However as it is already 3 years old, it suggests very little use compared to typical. It is possible the discs are very rusty & the dealer believes they will not last until the next service. The cost sounds about right for a main / franchised land rover dealer. You may be able to reduce cost by more than 30% by using a non franchised garage as suggested above. Make sure they are experienced with newer landrovers though otherwise they may not be aware of everything they need to do for servicing or dealing with the handbrake

Couple of points here:-
a) You are a woman and some garages notoriously try to rip women off because they are not supposed to know anything about cars.
b) The MOT only requires the brakes to reach the required efficiency. Wear is immaterial and normal wear is not dangerous anyway. It is possible the pads are worn down although I doubt it at 17500 miles
I suggest you ask the garage why they want to change the discs/pads and then consult someone who knows. Don't know about the handbrake although as far as I know it can be a known fault.

Hi all
Thanks for your help. Its due an MOT so I am going to book it in for that and see what happens. I am working on the basis that something like this should be picked up on the MOT if its an issue. In which case I could ask the MOT place to quote too. I will take it to Landrover specialist for MOT.
I'll let you know what happens. I want to keep the car as it was my wedding present from my husband so it aint going anywhere. Definitely a lifetime car just because I am sentimental about it

By "Landrover specialist", do you mean Landrover dealer? in which case DONT. The MOT is a set of rules that all garages should abide by and you might fall into the same sexist trap at a dealer.

Our D3 used to eat though brake pads, but we towed 3.5 tonnes very regularly

Dealers will alomst always advise to change discs as well as pads, when usually, especially since this is probably the first time the pads have been changed, this shouldn't be needed.

Whenever I service a D3/4 I always clean and adjust the handbrake and rarely does one need anything replacing, mostly due to this regular maintance

But even pads, discs and labour shouldnt be anywhere near £750 more like £250 - £300

Never use main dealers for anything other than warranty.

Agree re avoiding main dealers - especially for straight-forward stuff. Def no need to have an MOT done there as you are unlikely to get a fair assessment.

Thank you all for your help. I suppose I didnt mean Land rover specialist just a guy that does up landrovers. Anyway I took it for MOT yesterday and it passed with no advisory notes made. I assume that means that Land Rover garage Stratstone were just trying it on?
My neighbour always takes his cars to MOT place and came with me so lesson learnt!
I do have another question but not sure if I should start a new thread. Its around warranties and whether now the car is 3 years old should I take it elsewhere for servicing in the future or would that invalidate the warranty? As you can tell I dont do many miles in it as I also have a company car. The Disco isnt used for towing at all just for ferrying the dog whenever I go anywhere with him or in the bad weather, like yesterday with all the flooding. Unfortunately I was in the VW Golf!

Your car warranty is ok as long as you take it to a garage that knows about land rovers and will service it to land rover warranty specification. Good luck with your car.

Welcome to the forum and very sorry to hear of your loss.

Just for comparison, I took my rangie to land rover for a health check, nearly fell of the chair laughing when they said it needed £6500 worth of work. Needless to say I refused their very generous offer.

My mom is in very similar circumstances to yourself, my dad died 5 years ago and his car just isn't that much. I've taken charge of getting it serviced so that she doesn't get ripped off. Next time the disco needs a service, either get your neighbour or a male friend to go with you, you'll find they won't try it on then.

As long as genuine landrover filters are used, the correct oils are used and the logbook is filled in at service, they cannot invalidate your warranty.

Any competent garage can perform services on a in warranty vehicle. Not just main dealers.
