Hi everyone, never owned or even driven a defender until last week, just bought a 90s 200/300tdi (I'm not sure ) and got to say its the worst handling, most uncomfortable thing I've ever driven, but I love it that much its now my daily driver.
I've been reading a lot of threads on here with interest, look forward to chatting with you all.

Hi and welcome!

Sounds like a great Landy! Although they all drive like that.;)

Don’t forget some pics of the new Landy and invest in some decent security measures too. They’re popular with thieves.

Look at fan belt, wide and flat = 300, narrow and most likely more than one = 200, but you never know who has retrofitted what!
Ps even a good one is a shti drive:D

If it tops out at 45mph it’s a 200tdi.
If it can get to 55 before it shakes to bits and pull a house with it but your tanks empty it’s a 300tdi

Thanks for the welcome and also the information, from what's been said it looks like a 200.

Thanks. No leaks, just screaching belts, cracked windscreen, leaking steering box, speedo and fuel gauge not working, that should keep me busy . On the plus side the chassis and bulkhead look good to my untrained eyes.

Fit new belts, wait a week for screeching to restart, adjust belts, repeat weekly if its your daily!

You will need a snag list, and as you do repairs/take stuff off the list, you will find there is always more to add to the list.

Sorry didn’t know where to post so jjst been trying to find the right forum sorry
Hi I’m looking at a 300tdi it’s very clean from what I can see. I’m only getting into it. People keep telling me don’t get one they always go wrong it’s a waste. I jjst want some help as I’m so torn between getting one and just not bothering. I know I will have a laugh with it. I know every car truck whatever they all go wrong at some point. Just wondering like how bad are they ? I probably will go off road but I’m not going to go silly. Just not sure like I’m worried it’s going to cost an absolute fortune.Hope you can give me a good in site to it all ?

I'd say it depends!
How handy are you with a spanner?
Are you prepared that your not buying trouble free motoring? But that said, if you have the money and the time and don't mind the points above, I love mine. I'm still not sure I've done the right thing and I'm far from a mechanic so I'm hoping I can fix most of it myself. If you do buy one, make sure the chassis and bulkhead are sound and there's not too much rot elsewhere, if you don't know what to look for, bring someone who does.

Hi mate thanks for the reply. If I’m honest I would be happy to learn how to do stuff to make it cheaper but I wouldn’t say I’m great with cars or things like that I do Moto-Cross and I do a few things with my bike that’s it with a spanner my mate said he will come look at it with me as he knows a bit more which is good. Are parts a lot ?

No parts are fairly cheap compared to many vehicles and due to lack of electronics (on earlier models) they're easier to work on in many ways, even a replacement engine can be had for hundreds rather than thousands of pounds. The most important thing in my opinion is the chassis and bulkhead and other structural components are sound and free of serious rust, there's a lot of vehicles that look the part but are rotten to the core, but there's many people on here far better to advise you than me, I'm a complete novice myself.
