The 4-speed auto-box on my 2001 Disco2 TD5 is lovely; plenty of power for me.
A bit noisy when cold maybe, and at slow-traffic-shuffling speeds...but thats the engine/exhaust, not the gearbox.
Cruises quietly at 60 & 70mph pulling like a train at 2250 and 2500rpm respectively, checked that today.
Not got a CDL but the low range works perfectly.
And tows a horsebox like its not there.
Suits me as a lazy driver - What's not to like.?

more for a TDI
1.2 great for motorway cruising, but 1st feels harder to get moving – bad for towing
1.4 high revving on motorway but 1st is lower so easier to get moving – good for towing
1.3 makes a good compromise between the 2 for everyday use/weekend play.

There is also an option to keep 1.4 and could put in taller 5th gear into g-box from v8.

Think most people use puma as base for engine swaps at Mahker and they have 1.2 boxes anyhow which if you went m57.

I drove one Discovery TD5 Automatic today, they are nothing like 300 Tdi, I didn’t like it all. I will stick with Manual 300TDi. If anyone selling a 110 (Pre 1985) 5 doors then please get it in touch.

300 TDI is offically 1994-1998 unless someones converted it, then that can be a box of frogs as you can end up with a right hash up.

i like 1994-1996 as these are pre EGR etc so then you dont have that to deal with come MOT time since they changed the rules but then your looking for a very narrow varient. but they are out there.
