my experience has been similar my HG went and when i traded my car in i was told that all that needed done was the inline thermostat to be replaced ...

Is that all that needs to be done to reduce the risk of the HG blowing?
Sounds like a relatively cheap fix, in which case I'm surprised that Landrover didn't issue a recall ... or at least a service-update (or did they?)

they did but i never had the car at the time of recall, and seemingly if i had taken the car to them for repair i would have got a subsidy from them to have the car fixed in a landrover garage.
may be worthwhile taking it in to see if it has been done.

Thanks for the advice.
Another thing on my list of to-do's ..... wife just complained the the exhaust is now blowing..... dont you just love cars :)

Trouble is they're a typical British motor, great vehicle but far too unreliable.

But most of the time it's better this way than the other way round:

reliable vehicle but far too boring.

(On the other hand - watch my inputs if mine starts playing up......:D :D )

Well tell the wife to get under the car and fix the dam thing

These women love to dominate and bark orders. God bless them all :D

I guess they're all watching footie :)

Doesn't sound good though - I'll give the garage a call tomorrow and get them to check it out.
I really hope we've not bought a lemon - I'd assumed that such a low mileage and well maintained one would be ok.

Sorry Si!
I had vague recollections about your VCU problems (wasa bit drunk):p
But it took me ages to find it agen, I was searching for "VCU" thought i was immagining things when i couldnt find it

How did you get on a the garage, any news?

Hi Mondo

Called the garage and they said that the "reversing with brake on feeling" was normal, but when I pushed them about the clunk/bang they agreed to take a look - It's booked in next wed.

I'll keep you updated - Thanks again for everyones' help :D

Hi Guys

Just called the garage to get an update ....

"Can't find anything wrong with the car Sir"

They checked the VCU and said it was fine - The mechanic explained that in order for the rear wheel's to turn, BOTH rear wheels must be raised. This sort of makes sense really, as my understanding of rear diff's is that when you turn one rear wheel the other wheel would rotate in the opposite direction (I think !?). If this is correct, having one of the wheels on the ground would prevent the other turning. They put the car on a lift and confirmed that all wheels turned fine !
The dragging feeling when reversing on lock was described as normal for a Freelander.

Ref the clunk going from 1st to 2nd gear, they guy said he was unable to find anything wrong and although he admitted there was a slight clunk, said that this was nothing more than he'd expect on a 4x4.

Hopefully nothing to worry about then ...... I hope !! ;)

Sorry Simon - I think you have been fobbed off. I love the way garages use the "normal for a 4x4" line. I have had that line to explain why mine was bouncing all over the place after an accident when in fact it was a very unsafe bust shock absorber, to explain why I was charged and extra £20 for an oil change (because of course a 2ltr Freelander takes more oil than a 2ltr car?!?!) and various other fob off's. If you want something doing peoperly either do it yourself or make sure your garage is Freelander friendly. God I hate ignorant garages!!!!

It's possible that I'm being fobbed off, however, I've always been over critical of every car I've owned and always seem to find niggly faulty. My wife certainly doesn't see any issues with the car and doesn't think there's anything wrong.

I'll monitor it over the next couple of weeks - I drove the car about 30 miles today and it didn't clunk once.

re: clunk going from 1st to 2nd - most probably rear diff - tiny correctly diagnosed a similar problem on my Freelander recently - mechanic inspected and confirmed it was the rear diff mount which had collapsed - luckily only £30/£40 part + mechanics time to fix...
