Just read an article in the December issue of LRO mag and they make reference to two changes that will affect the majority of us boys.

1 Blanked off EGR will be a fail

2 Remapping will be a fail

Come into effect Jan 2012

Thats me stuffed on both counts!!! anyone got a plan?

Mackenzie:eek:

all i know from a mate in the mot'in trade is that if its fitted it must work right down to dash lights rear wipers and all the bit that dont matter at the min !!!

do a search on here ....untill vosa saysits going in the manual its all **** and wind ..there's a link on here to the "proposed" new test manual and nowt is mentioned as you have stated .....

sounds like bollix to me

there was rumours that lifted motors would fail aswell that turned out to be bollix aswell
imagine all the parts suppliers that would be affected if summit like that came into affect

Unless they are going to download your ECU map and compare it against a supposed standard map bit by bit they will never know. Even then every standard map from LR is different per vehicle as it contains injector codes and all number of vehicle specific data. Its not possible for your MOT tech to say if its mapped or not.

And so they should, bloody things. :D

Too right. The problem with HID is that not even the manufacturers can get it right half the time, then you get people who retrofit it and don't understand the whole arrangement properly and just end up blinding everyone.

On the EGR issue - IF it came into play, I suspect it would only apply to vehicles of a certain age, they can't change the rules outright and expect us all to be able to refit our old EGR systems.

IF and a bigger IF than before, they enforced a ban on disabling the EGR across the board then the trick would be to disable the EGR valve by welding it up for example, jamming the pin... and just let it sit there. I would keep the pipe work and install it for decorative purposes during the MOT.

Some of this year’s MOT changes are:
Steering locks must work.
Defective ball joint dust covers will be a fail (Some stations would fail on this anyway – they were wrong to do so until recently.)
Power steering fluid level on transparent reservoirs will be checked – insufficient fluid will be a fail.
Power steering pipe wear or fouling will count as excessive corrosion.

Some proposals that are on VOSA’s official test station memorandum:
Use of gas detection spray for LPG systems.
A check of towbar electrics where fitted.
Cat present.
Defective ABS/ESC components (I was under the impression it already was).
Main beam warning light.
All malfunction indicator lights must work.
Driver’s seat adjustment.
Speedo
Headlight cleaning system and self-levelling on HID fitted systems.
Battery and wiring.
Engine mounts.

Some of it seems a bit stupid to be honest, not all will make it through.

At the moment as far as I can tell it is an MOT fail to remove CAT's from newer vehicles anyway, a bit like newer vehicles have stricter emissions values - I would hope they would have a date system for this.

I bet they can change the rules. If they decide we all have to re-fit our EGR systems then we'll just have to bite the bullett. After all, look at the Low Emission Zone. Lot of older vans etc. suddenly become scrap.

Not as bad as Japan though. All those re-imported Disco's due to changes in Japanese emission regs. I think those vehicles became illegal in Japan as a result.

My EGR stuff is all boxed up and on the shelf in my garage just in case. Will bolt it back on if needs be for the MOT and take it straight off again once I get home.

Now's the time to get hold of scrap EGR bits while they are cheap as if it does become MOT'able they'll be like gold dust and cost the same.

Be curious to see how it goes, Not all 300TDI 90's were fitted with an EGR and a CAT.

Personally my EGR valve is in the bin and all of the wiring is removed, The cat has also been replaced with a standard not CAT pipe.

So how will they Know ?? will DVLA have all of those details on all vehicles
