The first point is that the tester probably won't have time to do the extra check for a re map. It's also very unfair that emissions are based on efficiency. How is it fair that a 90% efficient Ferrari engine can past but a 70% efficient smart car would fail and the ferrari is still producing more emissions.

I had my D2 TD5 MOT'd on Saturday (De-CATed and De-EGR'd) and the only thing mentioned was a touch of play in the ball joints.

Still, to be on the safe side I'm waiting for a bit before I get the re-map I'd planned done.

HIDs have always been illegal in the UK the only reason manufactures get away with fitting them is due to a EU exception which stops the car makers having to have several different specs for the same car for different country's,

As for after market kits They are 100% Illegal unless you get a Suspension Self leveling fitted and Headlamp washers which i think have to be pressure jets now even then i doubt they will meet the mark, As for them being 'E' marked that is just to say they meet the specs individuly not that they are kosha to be fitted to any vehicle, And them people that say ' Had them years never been stopped or failed an MOT' are pushing their luck If they get a spot check by VOSA or involved in an accident and the lamps come into play then its game over.

As for the Chips Ive heard various ways of testing to see if they are fitted, Most say that the manufacturers might or maybe already have ( I dont play in this stuff so not 100%) put unique codes in that a specific reader will pull up and tell you if its stock or played with, Then there is a belive that it might soon be tied into the Insurance data base so your insurance company can or will be told if its chipped come MOT time,

And heres another post of this rubbish!!!

I will say before I start what I am about to tell you is 100% the way your vehicle will be tested, I have done the refresher course with VOSA and have been told what the new UE law is, how the UK interpret these changes and how your vehicle will be tested.

First of all lights, HiD's 'may' be illigal without self leveling or washers however if they are not fitted to the vehicle then they are not tested, its a pass and advise, this is exactly how they will be tested and how it is in the manual.

EGR valves and other emission related parts, if the vehicle passes the emissions test then the vehicle has passed, removal of EGR valves is irrelivent and not part of the MOT test.

ECU remaps and modification of the management systems are NOT tested, there is no test procedure in place and no equipment available to check for this therefore it is NOT part of the MOT test.

All wiring will now be part of the test, any visable wiring that is loose will fail the MOT so if you have any invest in a pack of cable ties, it doesnt have to be the neatest it just needs to be secure. Remember that wires going through bulkheads need some sort of proitection, grommits or extra insulation to ensure they dont rub and cut.

All Airbags, SRS, ABS, TCS systems MUST work, removal of bulbs is not an option and will fail. This covers pre tensioners e.t.c. as they are part of the SRS system.

The battery must be secure.

A few other bits I didnt see in that list, you proberbly know these but here they are anyway:

Dash lights must work, Tell tales, SRS/ABS warning lights e.t.c., operation of speedo is not part of the MOT.

13 pin towing socket is tested for operation, 7 pins sockets must be secure and in 1 piece allowing correct operation although they aren't tested for operation.

All driveshaft CV gaiters (inner and outer) and support bearings are now tested.

Rear doors are now part of the test, must open from the outside.

All steering component dust covers (ball joints e.t.c.) must not allow the ingress of dirt, a pin hole is OK but split is no good.

There is possibly a few other minor things I have missed but I have a stinking cold and cant think right now.

One last thing, there is the option to pass some items that would otherwise fail if the vehicle is modified for purpose, this is designed to cover vehicles such as track cars which have ABS and airbag systems removed. This is relevant to many of us who have systems disabled for competition use. I will say that modified for purpose doesn't cover modified for the hell of it/because I like it vehicles i.e. boy racers fitting a fancy steering wheel and removing the airbag.

Thanks for the accurate update on the MOT situation. It's nice to know the scare stories are not true. It seems to me that the updates are just keeping pace with modern developments in car design.
I was interested in the last comment about the option to pass where vehicles are "modified for a purpose" How do you tell a boy racer from a track day car? Is it just the testers opinion?
This obviously will have implications for modified for off road Land Rovers?

Its not so much scare mongering but more the EU trying to control UK laws. We in the UK have very relaxed road laws compared to some EU states (german cars must run original spec tyres e.t.c.). VOSA wants to keep the UK as free as possible from these laws so they are working in our interestes and not the EU's, basically they wont roll over for them...

As for modified for purpose, it is testers opinion but it will be obvious. A vehicle with plastic fantastic bumpers, seat belt pads and flashy lights isnt modified for any other reason than (poor) fashion, a track car or off roader is modified for primary use as a track car or off roader. If it has a purpose outside of normal road use then it is classed as modified for purpose.

Always thought Gaiters were a RTF or was it just stearing gaiters

Liking the bit about moddified for purpose, A few track day mates will be liking that bit.

Outer gaiters were part of it but inners and support bearings weren't, they are now though... and yeah, modded for purpose is great, its kinda a get out clause to allow us brits to keep the petrol fuelled blood flowing and stop the EU from making as a communist motoring state...

So, I don't need to unplug my Synergy when I take the car the MLT then?

I need to be sure as it's sorting out the MAF at the minute until I getr the pierburgh unit sorted :)

as i have just decatted our dico and removed the egr, i thought it would be a good idea to take it down to my mot man and see what he said about the new regs etc, well he tested the emmisions and said they were well within limits and as reguards the new regs from the e u a lot depends on how arsey your mot man is,

Nope, with a diesel it is measured on smoke density, if its too smokey it will fail, get it warm and drive it hard before the MOT test, willhelp clear it out, an addative will also do wonders on a diesel engine...

Thank You.

My MAF is marginal, so the synergy has been keepinng it legit on emissions, my plan is to get a pierburgh, but if the rules had meant that the synergy would not be allowed I'd have had to get a bosch one, loads more money :)
