Can you explain what it does.

The number of people that I go out to that tell me that their car sounds like it has a flat battery and yet it cranks over and over and over is unreal.

What is your landy doing/not doing? Is it cranking over? Is it sluggish when cranking over? is there smoke from the exhaust? what colour is the smoke?

You should check what voltage is getting to your starter motor on cranking. If for some reason you're leaking power,eg, corroded leads, then there's not enough to turn a cold engine over quick enough.

First off check that your earths are sound!!!

You would be surprised how few people check that the earth continuity is OK, and then start moaning that their engine is hard to start!!

Do the basics first, and then see if there is a difference ... or go and spend a lot of money replacing things that don't need replacing!!

Do you even know if your starter has an earth? Mine doesn't and it starts fine but if it doesn't it might be worth putting one on.

new starter motor fitted last month....will check earth leads next..the good thing is the old disco fires up on 2nd or 3rd turn.....alternator reading 14v with lights & everything else i could swith on..

no closer to solving the earth leads look sound as all heavy duty & well secure. never leave home without spare battery/jump leads. can an alternator be intermtant or do they just pack up

Ours is the same, sluggish when it's cold.

I put it down to oil viscosity and battery condition.

Hasn't failed to start so didn't look into it further cos it's happy as larry until it goes chilly, and even then it's still passable :)

to give it a bit of extra help you could dip the clutch when cranking, that way the starter isnt having tio turn the gearbox over as well.
my 300tdi turns over pretty slow as well but generally only takes 2 turns before it starts and cold.

My 200tdi is like this too and that's with a new battery. Never fails to start though with the glow plugs warmed and the clutch dipped ;)

You running it on veg oil? I noticed mine got a bit slow to start when the temps dipped last week as it had around 30% veg in it. Stuck another £20 of diesel in it and it was much better.

Will never give up on me landy,,thanks for the input,, going to upgrade to a defender 90 as soon as cash in available

Did you actually remove the earth leads and clean up contact points or did you just have a half arsed look at them?

gave them a really good hard stare.....stared a little longer;;;sod it jumped in dipped clutch then off we go...not for long turned her off left it for 5 then fffffuuuuucc...k all nothing...all lights work as they should..ign lights all on..mmmmm....sat & swore for a while..thought about thrashing it with large stick...turned key again huh started straight up loads of juice in battery..
