It’s difficult to put a price on what it’s worth without seeing it in the flesh, so to speak. Even then, it is dependent on what someone is willing to pay. However, a well modified disco 2 on a galvy chassis will command a better price than one one a crusty original chassis. EBay tends to give you a starting figure if you have chance to browse.

It sounds very much like you’ve made your mind up on the new chassis. If I could afford to get it fitted after spending 20k on a vehicle, I would go down that route.

perhaps I have misunderstood the essence of the forum. I thought that people with limited knowledge (me) could reach out to people with more knowledge (you), to spark a conversation and ask questions to get insight. Sorry you find this pointless but I thought sharing my thoughts and getting peoples views was what it was all about.

If my salient question of how much are rare D2's worth in good condition, with all major works done is a waste of time then obviously I have missed the numerous adverts across the web which feature such vehicles.

I also thought me highlighting how much i am faced with spending on the 3 options could help someone else in a similar scenario.

Hi all,

so, the Disco 2 which I have sunk about £20k into is about to fail its MOT, on, you guessed it terminal chassis rot. Mainly at the front unusually but also at the back in the usual spot.

3 options:

1) patch it for about 400 notes to get another year out of it
2) a more substantial repair for about £2k - but the inevitable will happen sooner or late so feels like wasted money
3) go nuclear with a new chassis for circa £7-8k (Maer)

I am going to go with option 3 as this makes the most sense to me given I plan to keep it and given what I have already spent.

I have zero intention of selling it so am just curious as to what a very sorted D2 would go for to the right buyer with a galv chassis and all the invoices you could want. This thing has had pretty much everything done. So everything you would look for when inspecting pre purchase is done. New gearbox, transfer box, air suspension renewed, no welding required, sun roofs and all the niggles in between all ok, sills solid, diff lock added, the list goes on. 125k miles.

Interested in the debate on what you would get for it with that peace of mind. I note they are creeping up in value but I would say this one is in the minority of being able to prove the works been done through receipts to a high standard at a well know independent specialist.

Appreciate your thoughts and insights. And anyone who has also gone the whole hog and put it on a new frame, curious to know your experiences and how well made the Maer products are.

Get an agreed value if you can from a Land rover owner's club and go to someone like Heritage.
But then you have probably done this already.

thanks for your reply. Already got an agreed value with Adrian Flux which curiously was cheaper than the standard market value provided by esure, which did surprise me!

And yes it is a hobby and I bought it with a view to never selling it, so happy to keep bank rolling the project.

Specialist insurers are often cheaper for all sorts of reasons, providing you are insurer a special vehicle, all our kit cars are far cheaper to insure even though some of them, especially the Chesil Speedster, are worth a lot of money.

It's mostly to do with low mileage, the way they are stored, looked after and driven. Also they don't attract thieves so much as they are not easy to sell on. This is more true of classics and kits than land rovers though as parts from landies are easy to sell.
 
Worth what someone is prepared to pay.

Prices are on up.

5k to 12k huge range.

Depends on who wants it.

Some people want live axles, some not V6, is the last new traditional style land rover product.

But I do have to say that I have looked at Jap imports in the past as they come in with very clean bodies, chassis and in fact most things.
If you look at the prices of ones sold abroad they are easily twice the price of over here.
Price or value are really becoming almost meaningless terms.
But do have to ask, don't you ever get the urge to get some spanners and have a go yourself? They aren't that hard to work on!

to be fair, there are some things I will do and increasingly so. Part of the issue is time, but mostly its because I have no idea what I am doing. I did the thermostat not long ago. Took me ages but managed to follow the Haynes and got it done. Replaced the receiver in the roof which was easy but managed to get fibres stuck in my arms from the headlining! Done a few other bits and pieces too. But there is no way on this earth that I could do a chassis. Not got the tools for a start nor the time :)

I have seen some tidy imports around. But I have my eye on a nice Series 3 that a neighbour has got parked up. I keep offering him money for it but he wont let it go.... A sucker for punishment some might say...
