Hey all.
Well I finally got myself a freelander after much searching around.
Went from London to Devon this weekend for the bank holiday and noticed a lack of power up the steep hills and puffs of black smoke at high power or kickdown.
Any help would be great.
 
Vacuum hoses are a common cause of sluggish performance. There's a really long one that goes from the vacuum tank to the turbo solenoid. The rubber tends to crack and split as it gets older. The vacuum tank is located just above the gearbox on the right hand side of the engine bay. Check all the vacuum pipes that come off it. The one to the turbo comes right off the back of it and is the hardest to see properly. If you find any splits it's usually where it pushes over the fitting. You can trim it slightly shorter for a temporary fix. It's cheap and easy to replace them all with 4mm ID silicone hose.
 
Ah ok. Sounds kinda simple if you've been under the bonnet of a Landrover before. not sure what a vacuum tank or turbo solenoid looks like. Ill start by looking that up and familiarising myself with that and then follow your advice. Many thanks for your help. Velz

The vacuum tank is a black plastic container with reinforcing ribs on the outside of it. It's about the size of a tin of beans. I should add for clarification that it's the component circled in red.
 
HI thanks for your help. I spent around 30 mins in the rain tying to find a hole in a pipe, wasn't very successful, there are a shed load of pipes and doesn't look exactly the same as the diagram above. I need a land rover enthusiast or inexpensive mechanic not to far from London or within that can sort it I think.
Slightly disheartened as I hoped I find it and be able to sort it but I guess it wasn't to be the case.

It's never that obvious unfortunately. You have to methodically disconnect each pipe and inspect it. There are probably some water hoses crossing over the vacuum tank. My Freelander doesn't have them but the wife's does. If you don't know what you're looking at then it's probably better to get someone who does to look at it for you.
 
Whereabouts in London are you? I'm in north London (Muswell Hill). My Hippo is a 1.8 K-series, but our ZTT has the same M47R engine as your Td4 so pretty happy looking at these engines :)

Got it! And good idea to remove the number - you probably getting enough PPI spammers as it is! LOL
 
Thanks for the advice. When your free drop me a text and ill give you a call to arrange to pop over, maybe you can sort the issues with my motor or point me in the right direction.
 
Depending on the age of your Freelander it's a good idea to change the oil breather filter. There is an updated version that is effectively maintenance free. I did this recently and it instantly cured the black smoke. However, shortly afterwards an inter-cooler hose blew. Fixing that certainly improved performance on hills!
