Could anyone with a Nanocom and post 99 car with MAF and EGR take an external air temp reading for me and see what you get? It would put my mind at rest and if you also get -38.88 (or similar) save me shelling out for a new MAF - or if you get a decent reading, it'll tell me to go and buy one! :)

tnx

1998 is when EGR came in. Think you are barking up the wrong tree. What does your pump modulation read?

I don't have Nanocom but Faultmate is supposed to have the same sortware I'll take a look later. You don't mean external air temp though do you? You mean inlet air temperature.

Thanks for the date clarification. At £150 I hope I am! :) No idea about pump modulation. Still learning. I'll have a look for that option.

Datatek: It is just simply called "Air Temperature" on the Nanocom so I've no idea. I assume it is what would have been IAT

Have you actually had the maf off and cleaned it around the hot film with electrical cleaner to remove any oil deposits . The air temp on the nano is the maf whatever setting its at it should increase with the revs take it for a drive around and check that is rises if it doesn't its duff it should increase to a maximum of around 150 and be between 30-50 at idlel :)

Surely you're talking intake air volume and not temperature....

Saint. The volume is going though, but how does the the maf work the hot film/ wire heats up the air passing through cools it thus air temp the more air going through volume as you put it cools it down so the hotter its got to get that's why it's under tempi not volume

Air temperature
: The current air intake temperature in degrees centigrade, derived from the air intake
temperature sensor.

It measure the amount (volume) of air going through the MAF by using a heated metal strip, and the more it cools by the amount of air passing over it is how it works out the intake air volume.....I understand that....

But they are talking IAT, Intake Air Temperature...the actual physical temperature of the air being inducted.....

This figure will not fluctuate wildly with a rise in Engine speed....

I use the Fiat MultiECUScan software on the Girlfriends 500 and I can log the intake air temp which does not vary with engine speed....

I also use a couple of OBDII live data loggers with my L322, and the intake air temp doesn't fluctuate with engine speed on that either!!

So yes, you are right in how the MAF measures intake volume (although the older types used a flap valve thingy), but I think Nik is talking about intake air temperature.....

Well, as air passes across the mass air flow sensor, it cools the hot wire, increasing the amount of current needed to keep that wire at the specified temperature. The amount that the wire is cooled is directly proportional to the temperature, density and humidity of the air passing through the sensor and as such, the current increase needed to heat the wire allows the computer to easily calculate the volume of air entering the engine.

IAT doesn't exist on the MAF equiped vehicle the reading does not change.
Density is what matters, cool air is more dense, MAF measures density/flow thus temperature is derived from air density.

As I said I know how it works to measure Air volume, but we are talking intake air temperature. you said the air intake temperature reading will fluctuate with engine speed which it wont as the temperature of the air will not change greatly as it is sucked into the intake.

Intake air volume and intake air temperature are two different things.

At the end of the day forget the wording nano have put on the unit for the maf system is should rise with an increase of revs the increase in the sensor upping its volts to increase its heat due to the faster air that passes by if your reading for air temputre is not increasing its duff

It is an unused input as the sensor doesn't exist, it's mentioned in the info somewhere, it does not change, I've just checked it on my car.

So from D300's post of varying figures due to engine speed he is talking intake air volume readings and not air temperature readings as i mentioned?

Frankly I've no idea what he's talking about, the only figure that will change is volume not IAT.
Pre MAF cars needed IAT to calculate density for fueling:)

But its the volume of air that the maf registers forget pre maf cars nicks Is maf the more air the cooler the the sensor the sensor has to increase its heat and that's where the readings rise don't see how you can Check it on yours data your pre egr are you not .

2001 MY Faultmate MSV 2 Extreme, look at my signature so quite easy to check.
Air density and flow is what matters, the cooler the charge air the denser the air is, thus a greater amount of fuel can be injected without over fueling.

Yes that's the fuelling side but how does the sensor work and its readings its heated and the more/ faster the speed of air will cool it so it increases its self and the fuelling to match the air thus that's how you read weather the sensor is working if it isn't increasing its self nor registering the air flow thus no increase or any rise in the nano' s readings are you saying the nano hasn't the capability to read the maf sensor to be honest I don't know what your all trying to get at .

You are confusing the IAT reading with the MAF reading, IAT does not exist on the MAF car so the reading in the box cannot change, Nanocom and Faultmate work with MAF and pre MAF cars, the IAT box refers to pre MAF.

I think this refers to the maf sensor that reads air intake I have not seen any reading device it the nano I know the laters cars have a maf sensor in the air intake! And that the pre maf had a sensor screwed into the air intake manifold so if your saying the air temp readings on nicks nano are not for the maf what is it for the previous sensor before maf was introduced if so what in the nano reads the maf as far as I'm concerned its the air temp as that's in the air intake and not the intake manifold
