It is possible that the hiccup at startup is an injector showing early signs of failure.

It did it again tonight. It was warm so no glow plugs. It splutters after about 10 seconds of starting but only for about 5 seconds, it puffs a bit of blue smoke while it's spluttering too. I think it's possibly oil being drawn in, which explains the slight delay.
It only seems to do the splutter thing if the plugs aren't used. It's fine starting from cold, which is odd.

The additive I normally use every fill does contain a centane improver. However this last fill, I neglected to put it in.
I still suspect that the injector loom isn't perfect though. I've noticed a peculiar dropout and momentary miss just after startup, even if the glow plugs weren't needed. Very odd and another thing to check. I'm thinking that I might change the MAF for one of those £25 bay specials and check the injector loom too.

how would you go about testing the loom mate?
ive thought about getting one of the £25 jobs just so i know the maf has been changed. let us know how you get on

Strange that it's doing if from warm, all bits have expanded so nice and tight. Only thing is the copper washer at the top of an injector could be loose once warmed up.
I'm still going with a failing injector though:)

There's probably a resistance test for the loom, but I believe it's just easier to bite the bullet and buy the upgraded loom.

Initially I'm going to do a resistance check on all the cables while moving them about.
I need to make sure that it's not a wiring problem. Then I'm going to fill the tank with decent fuel, as this messing about only started after the last fill up.
I'm going to order that £25 MAF today, ready for fitting next weekend.

do you know what the resistance should be if its all working fine or are you just looking for a change in resistance when moving the wires around? do you have much info on the loom problem? ive tried searching on here but not alot comes up ( i am on my phone so maybe thats why)

let us know how the £25 maf turns out might work out well for quite a few people after seeing the price of the original ones

Injector loom resistance test was inconclusive with all wires measuring around 0.2 Ohms. The new £25 MAF is a definite improvement on my old Bosch MAF. I had a delayed throttle response at pull away with a lack of torque below 2K Rpm. The new MAF has restored that torque so that heart stopping delay when pressing the throttle was much reduced. So for £25, I'm happy. I'll see if fuel consumption improves now.

sounds good to me, shall order one soon, i know what you mean with the delay when pulling away.

hmmm...bad things are happening last 2 days. seems to have developed a misfire at idle speed up to about 1500rpm if you press the throttle VERY lightly when in neutral. the injectors that were fitted in november arent original bosch ones and are under warranty so maybe ill see if i can change them. i checked the resistance in the loom this evening and everything seems ok. the pipe i can see that could do with being replaced in the the thin pipe on top of the egr valve.

also does any one know the signs of the lp pump failing? it seems to make a noise just after the car is started for 10-15 seconds then stops.

Have I had too much beer, or have I just answered this somewhere else
I'll have a pint please and a double shot of whisky for @Gaj1612 I think he needs one.
Mike :)

whisky sounds good

Sounds like you have a similar problem to me although mine idles perfectly, only misfiring under light load or when revved.

its getting quite annoying, just been out for a short drive (around 3 miles) and it seemed fine until i got back to the house, then when left to idle it has a very slight misfire, when pressing the throttle very lightly it gets worse up to about 1250rpm then stops. once its held at 2k rpm the usual smoking and misfiring starts again. did plan to remove the crank breather filter today and see if it was the updated version but by the time i got around to doing it it started to **** down. i am tempted to replace all four injectors again as theyre under warranty. ive got a new fuel filter to be fitted and ill just check all the pipes again to make sure i havent missed anything. other than that im stumped

also, as i posted in my other thread, the low pressure pump has been making a strange noise just after its started for about 15 seconds, could it be that thats causing the problems?

Low pressure pump could cause issues if it's not giving correct pressure. It should supply 40 to 50 Psi. This is measured via a suitable diagnostic unit displaying live data.

any suggestions on what diagnostic tool to get, thinking of getting for my self...ill just keep an eye on the pump for now and see if it gets any worse till ive checked all the pipe work over again.

I've got an I Carsoft 930 which is ok. If I was to buy another diagnostic tool, I'd probably go for a Hawkeye as it is more comprehensive.

heard good things about them compared to the hawkeye? not sure wether i want one that will read other makes of cars as well or one that will just read landrovers

ok, so the wiper motor had decide to make devil noises, so when it stops raining for longer than 20 mins ill get the linkage and motor off, clean it all and give it some oiling. hopefully, itll shut up after that.

sooooooo... thought id have a look at the pcv filter this morning to see if it had the paper filter or the updated cyclone type, turns out its the cyclone type so saves me 30 quid happy days! anyway i got carried away and decided the inlet manifold and egr were coming off, egr wasnt as bad as i was expecting it to be but it was a bitch to move the plunger so gave it a good soak in oven cleaner.

the inlet manifold on the other hand was a different story, no pics unfortunately as i was covered in sludge. it was caked up to the tits with crap, so spent a while scraping out what i could with a screw driver before filling it with oven cleaner, its not perfect but itll be coming back off in a few days so i can fit a thermostat in the top hose.

whilst it was off i noticed one of the thin vacuum pipes were shagged so cut the end off for now until i get a chance to replace it all.

got it all back together and it smoked its tits off for about 5 mins at idle but seems to be running a lot smoother so happy with that for now.

new tyres this week hopefully along with 4 wheel alignment and new droplinks.
