Here is my Freelander 1.8 ES 2001

I thought that i would start this thread, not only to show my progress but to allow me to get help and advice from people that may of had had similar problems and can point me in the right direction.

I noticed a few things that needed to be done..

1. New rear window regulators
2. New clutch master cylinder (clutch pedal had free play and biting point was at the floor)
3. New drive shafts (free play)
4. New drop links (knocking noise)
5. New exhaust and lambda sensor (corroded)
6. Possible coolant/fan fault (not coming on but does with A/C)

and while i was it was all up on the stands i thought i would do some rust proofing.

Well so far i have fitted the new window regulators and i am pleased to say they are now working :) i also have taken off the old exhaust, drive shafts, drop links and master cylinder...

and after a few hours i managed to fit the new drive shafts and drop links...

and today i had the back box and centre exhaust turn up, so it is in position and waiting for the new front/cat exhaust to turn to be fitted...

I have also noticed that the radiator hoses are extremely hot, but the bottom hose was cold. So i have replaced the inline thermostat with a new one and waiting for a new sensor arrive. I did notice that the engine temp sensor said it was fine??

I have noticed that the fans will come on with the A/C, but since owning her i have not noticed the fans coming on? even with the hoses being extremely hot?

I do know that it has had a new upgraded head gasket fitted recently, and after reading up on the 1.8 i can see that this is a common issue. So i will be looking into to see how i can stop a reoccurrence failure.... like possibly a EWP.

Well thats it for now.

It is a big waste of time and money, nothing worth doing isn't :D.

It's looking great mate, good on you for taking it on yourself. Looks like you're well on your way, It'll be good to see how you get on :).

Will.

Seems like a big waste of time and money .

you miserable old wulf you :p

Good luck to you Clark607

i'm still doing stuff to mine ( i had it 18 months)bit by bit as and when I can afford it.

engine pulls like a train and far quicker than a doozle, cheaper fuel too!

keep us posted :)

I do have a friend who's had his 1.8 parked up for the best part of 2 years .

he'd better get his finger out and get the bugger running then!

that's what I did wi mine and that's what this fellas doin with his.

a bit more of the can do attitude works wonders.

i'm on record as saying i wished i'd bought one wi an l-series in it, but love the power of the "k" now.

no Land Rover is perfect

As I've stated on this site previously, my FL was standing for 16 months, and besides seized brakes and a few odds and ends, it is a nice drive, much more so than the previous car, a Rav4. And as it's fairly easy to work on, especially in these times of austerity, it's a win-win for me. :)

The Freelander will be my family car, as i also have the Disco....

I though why not get a freelander as a family car (space) and ideal for my wife to start her lessons with. I did try to convince her to learn in the Disco, as people would get out of her way on the road lol but don't think it went down that well.

But i do like the fact that we both have his and her's landy's.

Nice Disco.........and non of that pesky boot floor left to cause probs with the metal worm ;)

In further defence of K Freelanders, what better way to enter the world of Landy's for folks as want some fun and don't have the money for the more expensive ones. You can get a runner for a few hundred quid and we all end up doing the same fixes to them.

If the only thing people seem to moan about is the HGF, and there are ways and means to stop that happening, then what's left to moan about?

Great point. That's why I bought it.

You've clearly done your homework mate, you'll have problems to fix but we all have them and that's part of the fun. I haven't yet got into it and it hasn't taken me where I want to go and I've still got craploads to fix and upgrade on it. Yeh I have to check the coolant before and after each journey but that's why I carry a few litres around with me just in case. Be prepared and be vigiliant, that's wot you need for Landy ownership :D!

Will.
