look forward to it mate in seeing ur disco , think there’s about 6 x of us now and good sharing info between us

Yes I’ll need all the help I can get lol.

chassis was done with a compressor, treated inside and out , both with dinitrol , then cans of dinitrol to fill in the smaller areas, where i’ve taken inner wheelarch liners out etc

Ah that’s cool. Not sure I’ll have access to a compressor so might have to do what I can with cans. What did you do to clean and prep first?

also got to remove my rear bumper to fit a new PDC sensor loom, did buy the modified spare wheel winch , had a collar on it to prevent it being cut, but there is also a metal cover u need , as spare wheels get nicked, but seeing they are around £60-70 i got a bit of exterior marine ply and cut it to fit inside the spare wheel. drilled a hole in the for the winch to come through the middle of it, so cable can’t be cut and saves me some money , lol

parking sensors, ign on , put into reverse, put ur ear to the sensors and u should hear clicking if there are working ok

Thanks for the sensor info did not know that, hopefully that will determine if it’s a sensor wire or the loom needs changing.

Brilliant idea with the ply, I shall have to do that myself.

plse feel free to ask anything and if i know will be more than happy to help, but know others also have very good knowledge

will be good to see other work being documented and can then build more info on here

even things like where to get certain clips etc

Thanks very much, good know there are guys on here willing to lend a hand

ur very welcome and good through the forum in being able to share and help each other

over the weeks i used a wire brush to clean all the little areas that needed it and ensured there wasn’t any loose paint , i had also put a power washer on it and through it prior so knew it was all clean the best i could and let it dry for days

to be honest all i found was little bits of surface rust here and there , the sills need checking , seems if steps are fitted it can become abit of a water trip , took all my sill covers off and was fine, was all treated anyway

enclosed a pic of the updated spare wheel winch and also the simple piece of ply , not as good as the metal one but thought it was better than nothing

meant to ask have u bought a diagnostic reader yet plse

is urs on air suspension of the coils as it’s a 2004

Ah ok, reckon I’ll have to jet wash the back once the bumper is off and then maybe get a couple of spray cans to do it at home on the drive.
Mate would let me use his 4 post lift and compressor so maybe that can be a future plan.
Don’t think I have side steps but will check that.

Ah yes that’s the wheel winch I was looking at RST land rovers seem to be cheapest on eBay at £60. Also saw those metals plates but seemed an awful lot more money. Could probably make my own metal one for not much more than ply. Certainly less than they charge.

No I haven’t got myself a reader yet and I really should. That Gap tool you’ve mentioned in your buying guide looks rather good.

Mine is fitted with air suspension.

Actually another think that needs sorting is the drivers heated seat doesn’t work. Get the two lights on the switch but no heat from the seat itself.

the Gap reader is indeed the one to go for , island 4 x 4 are selling them i think for around £420 inc vat, that’s the bluetooth version and mine has paid for itself very quickly , as u can set all ur suspension up, get live data , read and clear all fault codes the list goes on and on, can virtually do the same as the T4 that land rover have

sound like the heat pad has failed , ensure the connectors under the seats are all plugged in

i bought the base model , as it was cheaper on ins

that’s what i thought about the spare wheel plates , if ur handy in being able to make one up

Yes seems to be a worth while addition. Can you flash the ecu as well to install updates?
Want to up date the Sat Nav, can it do anything with that?

Will check the plugs and if not be looking for new pads.

indeed, the iid can reflash and update all the ecus , u can even buy updates which i believe are £25 , done one for my turbo actuator , so that every time the engine is started up and turned off it cycled the actuator back and forth to prevent it from sticking

i’m not sure about the sat nav , maybe one of the other guys can help with that

u can get the clock display reflash where it also updates the entire system to 2006 , bit scary at first as all the lights go on and off , that’s all standard with the iid

the back up service is also second to none , they are based in canada, the guy Pat is extremely helpful and will go out of his way to always help

if u go onto the gap iid web site , go to the drop down menu of the bt iid it will show u what it can do

may i ask , assume all the belts and oil pump cover has already been done

if u ever need part numbers etc plse give me a shout

don’t know how much the heaters are , always worth checking all the fuses etc are ok , lol

Sounds like a cracking piece of kit. Probably top of my list come pay day.

Bought it off a good friend of mine who is a mechanic at LR Norwich.
He had it 6 months after it came in as a part ex.
Done 170k now but he replaced the cam and fuel belts last month alone with a new alternator so hopefully none of that should be a problem for a few years

they are good and suprising how quick they pay for themselves , plus having it to hand and not having to mess around with garages

great the belts are done, did he also do the oil pump cover to ensure it was the updated one

found this , ref heated seat

http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/119565/5497/element_assy___heating

mines just coming up to 100,000 miles , think it will be at least 2-3 weeks before i get the front suspension all finished , but will be so well worth it

then in the spring onto the rear upper wishbones , once there done it will be onto basic servicing as i’ve sorted out everything else

It’s been out at the top of the wish list lol.

Not 100% on the pump cover. Though mate did make a good point that if it’s managed 14 years and 170,000 miles its probably a good one and I’m inclined to agree.

Very helpful thank you, good to know I can get them if it is knackered.

Mines had all the arms done bar one rear one which is gonna need doing so think I’ll tackle that.
Wanna do loads myself but work 60-70 hours a week and spend most nights out in the lorry so spare time is severely limited unfortunately

if u get really stuck ref a code reader and heading this way i’m more than happy to use mine foc for u

great that ur mate knows ref these oil covers and ur aware

as a side note the front lower or rear upper will req 4 x wheel alignment done after replacing them , mines the rear uppers and will also buy the 6 x brake hoses and replace them at the same time, known to break when u remove the arms , will get the complete arms and not mess around with bushes and buy the range rover sport ones, suppose to last longer

as the range rover sport and D3 has the same chassis and running gear, just different bodies

i did do a few mods, upgraded the front seats to electric , fitted D4 indicator and wiper stalks and fitted cruise control, but know u have a lot of toys on urs, lol

indeed is always nice working on ur own landy , along with saving a small fortune

plse always feel free to ask away and plenty of us to share info as we’re all slowly learning things with D3 ownership

Your down in Kent aren’t you Stu? You on Facebook?
That’s very kind of you thanks.

Yer it pulls to the left so gonna need it all sorting out. Looks like the previous owner replaced all the ones on the mot advisory but left the one that was ok at the time
Gonna get the last one done sharpish then sort the alignment to save the tyres.

Ooo I think I remember you posting about the indicator stalks, I’m gonna go back and look for that cause I’d like them too.

The thing is with the oil pump is its fine until the belts are done then the stress of undoing and retorquing the tensioner bolt is what causes the pump casing to fail wrecking your engine.
Many many stories of pump failure some time after belts done.
Probably the single most important item to be done on the D3 as a wrecked engine means an older high mileage car is virtually worthless.

yep in kent so i don’t think i’m too far from u , plus ur very welcome , i am on facebook but simply don’t use it,

got hacked a little while ago so just stay away from a lot of the media sites etc

we’re these the stalks u was talking about , bought them second hand, weren’t much i think about £40 for the pair and found them a lot easier to under stand than the d3 ones

that’s was indeed also my concern ref the cover, hear of so many horror stories

Yep only up the road in Essex.

Yes they were the ones. Look very neat indeed, think I might have to find some myself

no worries , as a side note and not that it really matters , i’m gary , but been called other things , lol

they were very easy to change , don’t even have to remove the steering wheel and don’t need a diagnostic either

Out of interest how much did the parts cost you?

Just done a 90 mile run down to Dorking and after 171k I’m wondering if I should be thinking about replacing them

hi

assume where talking about the front struts, lol

they were genuine dunlop’s and got the pair for £320 inc vat , as i wanted to change them as a pair , have to also buy the nuts and bolts as they don’t come with the struts £25

i did also get some new heavy duty meyle drop links and front anti roll bar bushes

mines looks like the originals and just coming up to 100,000 , they should be date stamped if u look on the front of the struts and another date for the damper

hope that helps and be prepared to have a lot of patience
