Good afternoon fellow Landy lovers, first post here and looking for some advice.

I have a 2011 Freelander 2.2 td4 which failed its MOT last week on a broken coil spring. (half an inch off the end of the coil !)
anyways, what started out as replacing the shock turned into replacing the shock, the bottom wishbone, anti roll bar link and track rod end. (long story but I swear Landrover used plastic bolts on this damn thing !)

So all new parts fitted on the drivers side, back down for MOT and had tracking done at the same time. Well she passed with a couple small advisories no big deal. Driving home from the MOT I noticed severe torque steer when I put my foot down, I'm talking almost a quarter turn of the steering wheel to the right, let off the throttle and all returns to normal, drive smooth and gentle and I notice no pulling at all.

now ive been back under the car thinking I'm an idiot and ive forgotten to tighten something up (and the garage missed it somehow) to no avail, every bolt is tight and I cannot find any play ! ive been back under 3 times now questioning my own sanity and still I cannot find a solution !

Am I missing something ? is there something obvious I may have overlooked ?
Any advice greatly appreciated !

Jayy

Did you have 4 wheel alignment done, or just tracking? Removal of the wishbone bolts requires correct alignment after the work is done. For this reason it's best to replace wishbones in pairs, so only one alignment session is needed.

just tracking, have to say I would never have thought of that as didn't realise wishbones were adjustable in anyway. local garage is quoting me £80 for computerised 4 wheel alignment so ill look into that. thanks !

Recently took my new (to me) Freelander 2 for a shakedown run and soon realised the car was pulling to the right --- indiscriminately.

I remembered this thread and thought..torque steer....??? .maybe?..

After jacking the front off the ground, I noticed the OS front wheel had play with a left _ right jiggle..seemed like play in the rack..Diagnosed today as ware on the OS - Inner track rod ball joint...the outer (track rod end) seems fine.

Might turn out to be a cheap and quick fix ?

Funny you say this, I've just jacked the car up and checked and the inner tie rod is moving in and out. Replace that next. Funny this has only happened since I had the tracking done. Is it possible they've over extended the rod or something?

Hard to speculate really, though the inner track rods have a gator covering the ball joint.

Suppose finding play on this ball joint may not be immediately noticed like other bushes/ball joints around the car, unless specifically checked for.
Think, tracking a car with existing play in the steering rack control arms - may give the issue your experiencing.

Once replaced, yep, its another trip to the tracking centre.

thanks Coltron, thats pretty much what I thought. Theres no knock or noise at all while driving it but when I jacked it up theres movement side to side on the wheel with a distinctive clunk from the inner tie rod. seems a fairly easy change over so ill get that done this week and update.

Re- front end rattles (up-date)

NS & OS control arm lower ball joints have failed & trailing bushes have excessive movement.
(New control arms/wishbones and both inner tie/track rods are on order.)

Back end rattles

Rear NS shock had so much movement, the wheel could be rocked in and out circa 10mm (top to bottom) when standing.
Both rear shocks have since been replaced, (new struts), though rattles are still present, probably suspension bushes - but yet to identify which ones.

Looks like its had a bit of a hard life for all those problems with the suspension.

Aye Grumpygel, yep - a farmers car - with high miles, which is probably borderline scrap, though engine sounds like its never wanted for oil. In fairness I only wanted the all terrain tyres for my black freelander, but have grown to like the Caspian blue colour and trying to give the car a new lease of life.

Think the back end rattles are emanating from the rear stub axles, which appear to have a lot of float in outer CV Joints. the inner CV's seem to have a little wobble in the diff too. ( worn diff bearings??)

(Maybe should of started a new thread on drive train and suspension noises. lol)
