Day 1 of 9 :p

Then it was a matter of disconnected everything from the slitty engine. Eggsauce pipe was cut off as there was no way the manifold to eggsauce bolts were coming undone. Think they may be welded on.

Then it's out! :D Finally..... Been waiting for this day since i bought it :p

One thing I'm quite happy about is it looks like it already has a v8 clutch fork. Looks the same as the one i have sat on my bench anyway. Will check part numbers tomorrow.

So tomorrow's plan consists of cutting the battery tray out, remove the heater matrix and start cutting footwells back. Then weld footwells back up. And also cutting off the old engine mounts. Have some new mounts that i fabricated a while ago for another project which came to a halt when i bought this :p

Roll on Monday/Tuesday when the engine should arrive :D

Day 2 of 9.

Really didn't get as much done as hoped today. :( was up late which didn't help. And the wind and rain didn't help matters either even with my little shelter up :(

I did however get this much done.

Clutch friction and pressure plate removed from slitty. Will be used for now until i 5 speed it later in the year.

Spent the next few hours in between horrendous rain cutting off and grinding back the engine mounts. And cutting the passenger side footwell back.

Passenger side is pretty easy in regards to cutting 2 inches out to accommodate the v8 which is 25 inches wide with manifolds. Iirc the gap between footwells is only 23 inches or there abouts. Still going to be tight but at least it'll be in.

I did manage to start tacking on a piece to fill the gap in the last picture. Will fully weld it up tomorrow morning.

Drivers side is going to be a pain looking at it.

Will remove anything thats in the way and start cutting tomorrow morning also :)

Hopefully engine might turn up tomorrow :D then can start test fitting and getting the new engine mounts in place. Then i can finish off sorting the bulkhead (I've found a few holes) out before the final fitting of the engine.

If the engine doesn't turn up i will drain the diesel out of the fuel tank and clean that out instead.
 
Day 3 of 9.

Today i got the footwells finished, seam sealed, and painted. Also wire brushed the chassis back and gave it a paint except roughly where the engine mounts need to be welded on. Fuel tank has now been drained and also cleaned out with boiling water several times. And also started cutting up the gearbox tunnel to refit the modified bulkhead.

Had a call first thing this morning saying the engine will be delivered tomorrow :D

Tomorrow's plans whilst waiting for the engine.

Rearrange the brake lines so they won't be running directly next to the exhast manifolds
Move the wiring for the same reason.
And generally tidy up everything on the bulkhead.
Modify the accelerator pedal to take a cable set up. May see if i can fit the pedal from the pedal box of a disco.
Fit the other release bearing for the clutch i have lying about because the one that was in squeaked when the clutch was depressed.

Then once the v8 arrives start trial fiiting :D

Will also look to see how i can modify the disco brake master cylinder/servo to fit once I've finished the disco axles :)
 
Day 4 of 9.

Today the engine turnt up on the pallet :D

And also today has been a right old mission.

First up. Very skinny spigot bearing fitted to the crank. Was dreading this part as it is so thin. But drifted in with a piece of wood very easily. (at least i got the machining part right)

I managed to get the clutch (9.5inch) fitted by eye then torqued up. Then trial fitted the engine and it slid onto the input shaft easily :)

In nicely although not straight :( turns out the gearbox crossmember has been welded on wonky at some point when repaired so the gearbox also was sat at an angle.

Luckily there's some adjustments in the gearbox mounts so eventually got the box and engine sitting square and the engine correctly mounted against the bellhousing. :)

So today i think i put the engine in and took it back out about 3 times in total. :rolleyes:

Also don't have any 9/16 unc bolts to hold the box to engine.

By this time it was getting dark so packed up and had a brew.

Tomorrow's plans.

Get engine in final position and weld up engine mounts.
Connect fuel lines and fuel pump.
Start looking at the wiring.
Modify the gearbox tunnel to fit as I've still not done it.
Start connecting anything else that needs to be.

Day 5 of 9

Getting closer to the deadline but also very close to finishing :)

And must apologise in advance as I have forgotten to take pictures today :eek:

First job for today was moving me brake lines. So rather than going up the side of the bulkhead on the footwell they now head along the top of the chassis rail and round the back of the steering box.
Mainly because the exhaust manifolds are very close to the footwell on that side.

Then it was a case of pulling the engine out numerous amounts of times and puttingit back in but am pleased to say it ain't coming back out! :D
Engine mounts have been welded to the chassis and the lump is now sitting in there nicely.

Also started tidying up my wiring to move it away from the exhaust manifold and cable tied it out of the way.

Started to connect to fuel lines but run out of jubilee clips by the time i got to the fuel return line. :(

I also have brand new downpipes on the way from paddocks. Although i may have to modify them slightly to make them fit. Will then run one centre silencer then will go back and exit through the wing. Nice and loud! :p

More to follow tomorrow. And i will remember to take photos. :eek: Even if all I'm doing is wiring and boring stuff :p but hopefully may be able to look at the possibility of firing it up with out an exhaust if i pull my finger out :eek: :D
 
Day 6 of 9

Today spent the whole day wiring putting in fuel lines etc. Not going to lie but wiring isn't my strong point so finding it rather irritating :(

Anyway off the efi loom there are 5 wires. Please correct me if any of the followingis wrong :)

Brown = permanent live to battery
Thick white = cranking position on ignition
Thin white = on position on ignition
White/purple = fuel pump live
White/red = coil positive

Also had to buy a new alternator today as the one from my 3.9 is knackered.

Will get a v-belt of the right length tomorrow after I've measured how long it needs to be.

And finally passenger side seatbox set up. One advantage of owning a AGM battery is laying it on it's side.
The EFI ecu will also live in here so will need to see about sealingit to make it waterproof from underneath.

Wiring still needs alot more tidying up but other than 2 wires to connect, filling engine with oil, and remounting the radiator and filling she's ready to start! :D:D :banana: :D:D

You should be able to turn the front of the alternator so that tensioner bolt lines up with original slotted bracket.
 
Day 7 of 9.

And what a right ballache today was :mad: also no pictures again as nothing worth taking a photo of really.

I have almost managed to get it started. But having problems getting power to the fuel pump when ignition is switched on. :( the engine turns over but can't get the fuel to the fuel rail.

If i hard wire the pump directly to the battery it works so may have some a wire wrong somewhere.
Luckily a friend who can actually read wiring diagrams will come over to give me a hand so should get it started.

Will be picking up a new v-belt tomorrow also and then look at starting to get the front end back together after faffing with the wiring and hopefully getting it started.

Then all i will have left to do is bleed brakes, tidy up all the wiring, and fit the exhaust :D
 
Day 8 of 9

And it's still not running :doh:

Had it running properly for about 10 seconds attempted to blip the throttle and it died again, by is point though my battery was pretty much dead so gave up for today. :(

On the other hand wiring is complete everything works properly except the fuel pump. Which I'm now just going to hard wire in with a fused switch.

Alternator is now connected to the starter and also getting the charge light come on on the dash.

I still haven't connected up the radiator yet though as hoses need to be mucked about with to make fit.

So all in all pretty much there :).......... Just!

I did however start putting the front end back together this evening so do have a couple of pictures.

So still got a fair bit of tidying up to do and fitting of bits to wings so hopefully may have it finished by tomorrow :eek:
