So, Ive found something on fb marketplace (where all the best things are)
Its very clearly an 88 S3, but apparently its registered as a 109, so its obviously a ringer. Now, if its just a parts car, that doesnt matter, so, my question is, would it be within the realms of reasonable land rover purchases, and the law, to buy it and rebuild it onto a brand new 109 galv chassis? Is it possible to get the pannels needed to do this, or would I need to buy ankther body? (In which case its an entirely wasted excercise)

As said may well be a completely honest mistake in the add. TBH if its close go see it and look deep into what's wrong, if its not close forget it. The chassis number should tell you what it was and the V5 probably matches the number plate, I would take a guess the number on the V5 wont match the chassis:eek:. You could always ask for pics of said numbers and you would probably not get a response if the present owner knows anything is suspect.

Tell the seller "no thanks don't buy stolen stuff " and why, Be prepared for a frosty response;).

I mean, looking at it I would say that any dodgy doings happened a long time ago, it looks like its been left to rot for a while.
Yes, V5 says its a 109, V5 matches the numberplate, numperplate is stuck on an 88, so theres no way that the chassis numbers match in a way thay is legit.
The legallity of the car in its current state is unquestionably dodgy, but really I wanted to know if it could be made relatively legal, and be a sensibly priced way to get a 109, but it isnt!
 
So, Ive found another 109, this time a safari (5 door SW) and the seller seems willing to take my subaru in part exchange.
Its a diesel (which is my prefered choice) and it doesnt have overdrive, but one if available for additional cost.
Its had a galvanised chassis, but Im told the bulkhead may need patching up in places, and the door tops are going to need replacing.
Now, heres the catch - its 6.5 hours away (365miles) according to google maps, so its a 7h drive including stops to get there, and Ide imagine a 9 or 10 hour drive back home.
So, my questions are:
- If I take tools with me, can I install the overdrive in a carpark?
- It sounds to me like all the steel bits except the chassis need repairing or replacing. Assuming the bulkhead is repairable, and the door tops are not, which other bits are likely to need attention/spending?

Yes, Im mad enough to drive a 50yo land rover that distance, if the consequences are a long walk in the rain, but not if its going to end in a bad crash, so Ill be checking thoroughly that the brakes/steering/lights etc work before handing over a penny!

If it gets you the 365 miles home, its a.keeper, but my money would be.on it breaking down after about 100 miles. I wouldnt attempt to install the overdrive in a carpark, cant the current owner fit it for you before collection. Join the AA before collecting.

Bulkhead 'needs patching up in places" is something i'd run away from .... unless it was seriously cheap to buy.
A bulkhead change is not for the feint hearted.

Don't fit overdrive in a carpark ... Join the AA (as @Colthebrummie suggests and drive it home :)
 
The thing about overdrives is that unless it is already fitted and running, there is a.likelihood that one or two crucial bits might be missing but not obvious until you come to fit it. Also, a hole needs to be cut into the seat box for the lever, does this hole already exist?

Yep, alright, the overdrive installment is out of the question then really.
The entire deal hangs on him taking my subaru in part exchange, and Ive had a "probably" but not a "certainly" response - but we'll wait and see.

Thats a long trip on a maybe...he might not want it or his Landy bulkhead is goosed...they are not easy to patch I know as I'm doing one just now...and it's totaly stripped and off the chassis...
 
Its being sold by someone who has a bunch of them, and hes loosing the space, hence the supposed reason for sale, and why hes got an overdrive too, but its currently in another landy.
The "good" thing is that its the most expensive one he has listed, which implies its the one with all the best bits, assuming he hasnt got another which hes keeping for himself, but I dont know.
If the deal does go forward, I can always stay somewhere nearby and get some parts sent there if needs be (Im thinking brake components etc) or I could tow it back with my disco, but a 700 mile journey at 14mpg doesnt sound much fun
 
Sold S3s under liscence using the santana name until LR went coil when then 90/110 came out, then LR wouldnt let them copy their homework anymore, so santana carries on building and developing the S3 platform, using parabolic springs and whichever engine was supplied by the company they has a deal with at the time
 
Arent santanas left hand drive? My feelings about them is that they probably suffer less corrosion because of the climate they have spent most of there lives in but they were assembled and maintained by foreigners.

So parabolic springs is the only difference that they developed then?...seen a few down here...would'nt like to try to get parts for them...

Yes the PS10 has a 2.8 turbo diesel. The 4wd system is also different, its the traditional 2wd - 4wd hi - 4wd low, which isnt as good as the normal LR one, but pretty similar to a series.

You missed out on one major spec...some came with factory power steering also why would they build RHD to deliver to the birth place of the vehicle they bought the kit from...
