Hi, Jason

I'm in burton on trent as well

not had to buy any yet - so don't know where to get it near here

We've only really got Halfords or Motormania in burton - like you say Halfords don't do it - just phoned Motormania they said ' no mate - texaco mtf-94 - you'll have to get it from a Texaco garage ' only 1 problem , no Texaco garage near here - I'll try & find the nearest one - although there's no guarantee they'll have it !

I think i've read somewhere (may have been on here) that you can get it from Ford garages - will give the local one a bell & let you know.

update - just rang local ford dealers - 'sorry mate - never heard of it!'

tried a couple of other local places - no-one seems to stock it or even heard of it

will keep trying & let you know - good job I found out how hard it is to get round here for when i do need it

should be able to get it from main dealer , but nearest one would be Stafford Land Rover - about 25/30 miles away.

When are they leaving? ther must be someone online who sells it.

come on folks - lets help jason out - anyone know where to get mtf-94 (taxaco) gearbox oil in the Burton/Derby area

Cheers Burtonboy, Top man:) That would be fantastic mate as the people who will be getting it for me and bringing it out wont know the difference between gearbox oil & Fish n chip stuff:D

You can order it from an online shop and have it delivered to Burton on Trent. For example from: STC9157 (aprox 100 mi north from Burton). This is what I take, the 5 liter can and I split it in half with someone else.
Or have it delivered directly to you, it shouldn't be too expensive.

update Jason, found a Texaco garage a couple of miles outta town - will check if they sell it on my way home tonight or on my way in in the morning & let you know in the morning

where do your Burton peeps live ? - the garage is in on the A511 (Ashby Road) if thats anywhere near them.

If they don't have it - it looks like an online order job. - how much do you need - 5L for a complete change or just 1L for topup ?

I think that they live near there:)

I need 2.7 litres for an oil change, recently fitted a re-con box and as I could'nt get any MTF-94 here (not even from local Land Rover garage) was forced to put in ATF Dexron 111 for a quick fix. It's a another long debate (is'nt it cpx2?) what oil should be in there, Land Rover changed there spec in 1996 to MTF, the company that sold me the box advised MTF,I want to put MTF in if I can find some of the blooooody stuff!

Thanks once again for your help ;)

Jason

now we know the LR part No. (thanxs to cipx) found a couple of places that sell it online (STC 9157 gear oil man. trans. )
Rimmer Bros - £18.99 / 5L
LR Direst - £21.09 / 5L

have your peeps got time to order it and get it delivered before they leave ?

the workshop manual for my 2001 TD5 states 'Texaco MTF-94 or Dexron 111 if MTF-94 is not available'

just wonder what all the other discos I see every day are using ?

I was told by a local garage I rang it was always readily available from any Rover dealers , but now they've all bit the dust it looks like its a landrover main dealer / specialist job.

Jason phone Morris Lubricants and ask for their technical dept, you dont actually need MTF-94 it can be substituted for a different oil. 01743 232200

I already phoned a similar place up here, 2 aperatives, 3 course meal & 3 bottles of red later they came back with ATF Dexron 111 being the only oil that they could recomend for the R380 box:mad:

That sounds about right mate, dextron 3 is fairly high grade stuff. Give Morris a ring they do know what they're doing

Called at the Texaco garage this morning - all they had was a few dusty cans of 'Q8' & 'Halvoline' engine oils no gearbox oils at all - asked the spotty 17 year old behind the counter who said (after he'd unplugged his ipod & put down his comic ) 'nah mate that's all we got'

To be honest it was only a small filling station with a couple of pumps & a few stale pork pies & sarnies - didn't even have any wilting flowers or bags of BBQ charcoal outside !

Sorry mate, can't get the bloody stuff anywhere around the Burton area - has a good search on the web & can't find anywhere selling MTF-94 - all you get are links to various forums asking ' where the f**k can I get MTF-94'

I think your best bet it to get your peeps to order it from Rimmer Bros

Rimmer Brothers - Price List

enter part no STC9157 to get price in pounds or euros

or order it youself & get it delivered over there -but looked on their website & delivery to all EC countries for items between 2kg & 30kg is £25 to £35 so delivery would be more than the stuff itself !

2-3 day carrier delivery in the uk is about £12

Thanks a lot for your trouble burtonboy, I appreciate it:)
Have one of your ale's on me:D

Bollix to it, last box did 130k with out an oil change with Dexron 11 to the best of my knowledge, at least last owner admited that he had'nt changed it in the last 8 years/70k so the Dexron 111's staying in for the time being!!!!

Thanks once again

Jason

If you think you might need something else, like a brake pad set, UJs etc, you can qualify for free UK delivery on lrdirect (orders > £50+VAT).

ridiculous aint it - mtf 94 is recommended for most r380 gearboxes in discos, & lots of rover cars but you can't get the bloody stuff anywhere

as I said the manual for my 2001 TD5 says you can use dexron 111 if mtf 94 is not available

Just to complicate matters, while trawling the web I have come across several recomendations of Castrol SMS-X as a replacement for MTF-94 - this is also what the Ford guy recommended when I gave him the spec of MTF-94 (ie GL-4 75W80 ) although the specs i found say this a fully synthetic 75W85 & it is what castrol list for a disco manual on their website

see the attached doc from another forum (supposed to be from land rover press release )

makes me wonder what's in mine - according to the service book the gearbox oil was changed at 72K & topped up at 84K by Stafford Landrover so I presume they used MTF-94 , now done just over 93K.

normally the best (and only) place to get MTF94 is a L R main stealer or a local independant, I think texaco make the stuff and put it in Landrover packaging.

just found this on the rave cd under 'Technical Bulletins'

GEARBOX OIL - CHANGE TO SPECIFICATION
