Suddenly hit with these MOT failures, yet last year nothing and only done 700 miles since, rather disappointing and frustrating to say the least. Has the tester been over zealous? You have no appeal. Any pointers about the following are much appreciated.

1 Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive

2 Hand brake lever, pawl mechanism pivots locking device missing

3 Front service brake grabbing severely

4 Service brake is causing the steering wheel to severely pull one way (towards the kerb)

5 Offside rear brake binding

You can appeal ask at the MOT station for an appeal form, but with those faults i wouldn't bother.

1. - depends on the year / engine & readout?? more info needed, if you dont do a lot of miles it is always a good bet to chuck a can of 10k boost through before the MOT, works wonders clearing out crap and can do magic with emmisions, it may be that it only needs a visible smoke check using the testers discretion but without more info can't comment.

2. yes it needs to work properly

3. Dangerous - clean, dekunk and test, may be worth popping the pistons out and emerying them off as they may have corroded with little use. Yo be honest its cheap to replace the cylinders, Ive just swopped all mine at under a fiver each off Ebay, its brakes, better safe than sorry

5. lack of use....but drum may also be out of true, does sound like lack of use though, strip clean and adjust properly if all components okay, only a couple of hours work at most.

With the exception of point 1 I would say your tester is potentially saving yours and othes lives not being over zelous at all, as to point 1 more info needed

siezed / seizing components with exceptiion of handbrake bits missing.
that shoulda been picked up last yer tho.
 
10k boost sounds a good prospect, positive review on diflock, the other mechanics we are attending to. Its the emissions factor which is going to be difficult to overcome.

Would I spray it into the air filter on 2.25 petrol

Just buy redx and dump it in the fuel tank when quarter full then top up a bit

Would an Italian tune up help with point 1? Take it for a run and keep the revs high, should help burn some of it off. And make sure it's all warmed through before the test.
 
That should be a standard method for most testers anyway, at the one I take it to they run the engine til its hot enough to bring the reading down

Use a rad muff or something to drive the temp up further if need be, or if it is a petrol you can tune the carb down to a leaner mix
 
We have an MOT pass.

Sorted the handbrake as per Landrover Series Workshop Manual. Overhauled and adjusted brakes including new master cyclinder. Bearing on starter motor went and damaged insides. Bought a reconditioned one on ebay from an auto electric firm in Rotherham. A quality rebuild I would say and prompt service. Tinkered with mix etc.

Went back for retest and asked them to adjust mix if necessary to pass emissions. This time totally different, checked brakes and adjusted slightly, altered mix etc but they failed it on a brake light not working which they replaced and then passed it. No payment was required but I gave them £10 tip to cover bulb.

Emissions as follows: Petrol, CO level 0.19 % vol, HC level 31 ppm, CO2 level 13.76% vol, O2 level 2.13% vol, Lambada 1.100, just enough to pass.
