Did anyone take any sand tracks last year?

Nope. When we got stuck which we all did at various times, we relied on one of the others towing us out. On one or two occasions two vehicles had to tow if we went down in deep soft stuff.
If I had a pair kicking around in the garage I would take them if I could store them out of the way, but I wouldn't go out and spend a couple of hundred pound on a set. I would prefer to spend it on a decent fridge freezer personally.
I can't think of any situation when we might have needed any on the last trip.
Oldun has done many more trips down there and has more experience than I do. I'm sure he didn't have any.

We had some, not metal ones, that we used a couple of time, mainly when we were stuck pretty bad in the river bed and lost the bullbar

Dometic compressor fridge
Thinking of getting one of these and rigging it up to an inverter for the compressor side. Along with a little black box to turn off the supply to the lot when not needed.

Deffo gonna do something better than the last fridge i took. Just couldn't keep it cool at all.

Dometic used to be Electrolux - and the model looks virtually identical to the Electrolux we bought well over 15 years ago and still going strong - not sure how it will stand up to a rough ride though but will find out next month when Owen is using it next month for our little jaunt to WS.

Heh, if I have enough money at the end it might get it wrapped in 3M clear gloss vinyl, just ordered new brakes for it, 4 callipers and discs as the ones on it are in a shocking state. I will give the callipers a good soaking and cleaning and keep them as spares, same with the original shocks.

Yes, I want to do something better than the last trip. Warm beers did not go down very well at all. Good idea using a converter to run the compressor on the cold box. Trouble is when parked up over night, would be great to have one you could switch to gas. Haven't seen one though. Any idea how much power you would need for the converter. I have a 300 Watt one. I have a 60 amp alternator, might think about a 100 amp one if I go down this route

Keep us posted on the cool box. I don't want to spend £600 on a cold box that I will probably only use once a year.
I suppose one alternative is to go more often.

Mike,
My thinking is to use the inverter during the day to get it nice and cold, then at night, after a day of charging out second battery, switch it over to 12v. It's not going to be opened much at night once in bed.
Should keep it cold enough over night, then when driving, change to inverter and charge battery.
I'm also toying with the idea of sticking a 100W solar panel on the front of the roofrack. We didn't put much up there last time so there's plenty of space. This will be used to top-up the battery while sat in the desert watching everyone play :).... Or sat outside a garage in zagora for the day.. least the beers will be cold then ;)

This doesn't seem too bad a price, what literage do people reckon?

Waeco Dometic CDF-35 Coolfreeze compressor fridge freezer, brand new, boxed | eBay

Good price. My only concern would be is 31 LT storage capacity enough? I had a 35 Lt one which I found just a bit too small. I have set my mind on a minimum of 40 LT. By the time you put a couple of tall bottles of water and some beers there isn't much room for anything else. Not even enough beers to share out. Keep looking, your doing well though.

LOL, hope we don't have to visit Zagor again. Any idea what capacity inverter you would need for that? The price seems good. The one I saw for £529 will chill to -18 on 12 volts power but its a lot more money.

Haha, thanks :D

I wondered on size, will keep my eye out for greater than 40L ones then.

So I have on my list to sort out before I go:

Tent
Water Carriers
Racking
Shovel
Inverter
Dual battery setup
Fridge
Hi Lift mount
Spare wheel carrier
CB
Spare Parts
Steering guard

probably a bunch more stuff.

Have you got a roof rack? strap them on there, it doesn't rain over there and everything is covered in sand, inside and out, anyway.

Cheers

Yeah, bought a flatdog one at LRO Peterborough. Not that I have a working car to put it on yet.

Thing is though if I can poss afford one I am going to get a roof tent as I plan to use it a lot in the next few years but I think a roof tent would take up all of the rack on a 90 and wouldn't leave space for anything else...

Yeah, they ain't cheap. Looked at one before we ripped out the back of the rangy.
Mike's idea seemed to work pretty well, he had the option of penthouse view or down 'n' dirty with the rest of us.
He could have put stuff on the roof in the day that he needed when stopped, not that it'd have helped with the jars of sauce exploding everywhere.
Key to stuff in the back, make sure it's secure and can't fly around. It's amazing what flies off when you doing 40-50 mph on the desert and run over a 1 foot drop in elevation or hit a sand ramp :)
Poor spacedawg, his roofbox contents took a right bashing too.

I'm looking forward to being able to plan where everything is going to fit, will hopefully have the 90 back on the road by the end of Oct (fingers crossed), so can start getting everything sorted.
