I'm still in for an easter trip

Edit: and of course for a drink

Hi, sorry, missed you out. So +1. That makes 4 possibles.
Couple of things one should be thinking about for the trip is a decent cool box to keep the beers cold. And a CB so we can keep in communication. I mention these now so you can keep your eyes open on ebay etc. Once I can confirm the trip is definitely on near Christmas time I will use the list that Chris put together for the previous trip and start giving it more serious thought.
I find half the fun of these trips is the planning etc. Just thinking about it has given me the bug again. Oh, and of course one needs to make sure the vehicle is all together. Any weaknesses will come out on a trip like this.

A list will be useful, especially what drive train bits you think will break (as mine is a standard 90).

Def gonna get a fridge of some kind, need cold beer!

A list of what stuff to take would be handy, as I tend to want to take too much stuff wherever I go, I'm going to the Overland Adventure show tomorrow to get some storage ideas and have a look at whats on offer, but a meet up with some people who have actually done the trip would be great.

It'll be the first time for me too. My 90 is currently more apart than together...

Pick my new Defender up on Monday, and will start work on it soon, suspension ect, as its all standard at the moment.

My advise would be to keep it standard particularly if it is a 110 - just add under body protection - just make sure diffs and halfshafts are in good order - oh and don't forget a kinetic tow rope and good towing points.

Hi Oldun, wasn't sure if you were still in the UK. I still have you down as a possible for the 2015 trip. I recall you mentioned you would know around Christmas time. My situation is looking more positive for 2015 Easter time. What I need to sort out is some navigation devise. I need to start looking into it more seriously.

Hi Mike - not off to Morocco and WS for a few weeks yet - just going this time with my son - but each in a 110 - am taking my laptop with Garman Mapsource on it together with a Garman GPS 60csx - already got the route laid out on Mapsource and will just follow the red line on the GPS!!.

I had downloaded Garmin BaseCamp on my PC to play around with but I am struggling with it. I have a Laptop which I could take along. I'm not sure which to go for. I'm torn between a hand held or a note pad and Garmin mapping.

Not sure about Basecamp - but if you go into Google and enter Olaf Mapping you can download for free all the tracks in Morocco onto your computer - my handheld is a bit small but not yet found a way to mount my laptop or put GPS into laptop!.

Thanks, Oldun. I have downloaded MapSource and the Olaf Mapping. I will play around with these this evening.
Any help in this area is greatly appreciated.

Thanks James - my ideal is a Panasonic Toughbook with inbuilt GPS that will follow a route on Mapsource and somehow secured to the dash. Off to do some gardening now in the sun.

Is there a dedicated sat nav unit such as the Garmin units found on boats? I would prefer to have a dedicated unit instead of utilizing a lappy, as for modified 110 I will put a two inch lift with cranked arms, winch bumper, recovery eyes, new DMF and clutch, replace all bushes with Poly, cooper discoverer tires on steel rims, go through the whole truck and replace anything thats needed, then once I'm happy with it I will get on with kitting it out for the trip, CB etc, racks, storage, there was some interesting products at the Overland Adventure Show today.

All good stuff above. The only thing I would think twice about is the two inch lift. I personally would leave it standard on a 110. If you hit some soft sand you will go down and need towing out. The extra lift will not make much difference, you will just sink in 2 inches deeper. The extra lift may put extra strain on the prop shafts and UJ joints. I did a trip earlier this year and did not come across a situation where the extra 2 inch lift would have made any difference. Steering guard and diff guards might be worth thinking about. But this is just my opinion. Others may differ and I don't profess to be any kind of expert. Standard stuff can be repaired and replaced much easier. Perhaps some others might chip in and give there opinions. The shocks have to be in good order as they take quiet a bit of punishment. If you see this clip you will get some idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNQQxr5cR7M#t=235

Some bloke at the show who goes across Africa twice a year said to take a couple of spare rear shocks, he recommended Old Man Emu ones, steering guard I was going to get from some bumper place in Coventry. I've a cleared budget of 6.5k authorized by the Home Office to carry out modifications, so I will be pretty thorough like I was with my 100 inch Hybrid. Must profess that using aftermarket cranked radius arms might be a concern though.

6.5k should make you a pretty kick ass 110.

I am also in the market for a steering guard and tank guard(s).

I'm currently fitting a dual tank system, so that should be ready to go by then once I figure out where to put the fuel filler.

Mine will have had all round new shocks and springs, will I still need spares? I have some serviceable track rod ends that I will bring along.
