Yes the skills that i'm learning at this place are quite valuable., pulling engines dissecting and rebuilding them is, to put it in a cheesy way "fun"

Fortunately I learn relatively quickly regarding hands on work ;)

Working towards the papers/qualification is what i'm aiming to do, once i have them i'll be off and running.. ;)

Hopefully..
very few strip engines etc and learn, they can give you wads of info on specs

Agree when i'm at your level of being able to rebuild anything in no time and the ability to recite part numbers off the top of my head i'll be happy. :D

it'll take me 30yrs but i'll get there ;)

@Henry_b

Wished to say , great rebuild, hats off to u and indeed great amount of knowledge gained

May i ask a daft question please, after u grind and install the cyl head valves , do u tip the head on its side and fill up the inlet and exhaust ports with petrol to ensure the valves aren’t letting by

Alas don’t know if it was good advice I was told many moons ago as I done it in many heads that I rebuilt on my old series landies , forgot all about it till now and seeing u rebuilding the heads

Thks again

Thanks Gary!

Yes we did fill the ports with petrol to ensure the seat was petrol tight..

If they pass then its on to the next step..

Of course they were good and we moved on ;)

I digress, again..

This old Transit motor was pulled out because it had ingested some water, around 6months ago..

Odd that it doesn't have the "banana" manifold, but hey ho this one is easier..

Now she's on the engine stand, what a faff i tell ya!!

The head has been pulled and it was full of water, she is locked up solid..

all dried out and the bores are soaking in oil to hopefully loosen the rings..

On another note the injection pump is locked solid..

This engine is probably in need of a rebuild, have to see what the owner says.

Nice pile O bits ;)

Got a few more dead tappets..

The oil pressure problem was eventually found, it was defective O-rings in the oil filter housing.

Unfortunately while funning it with low oil pressure has damaged the already fragile tappets..

So all 16 on the right hand bank are to be replaced..

Anyway this is a pic of her together..

I have a few of the damaged cam shaft and journals i'll post it soon.

@holidaychicken

This is the damaged cam..

Also the Vanos unit was destroyed inside, so a new unit had to be bought from ebay luckily it was pre- rebuilt so just a slot in job.

The clogged oil feed "tray" certainly caused carnage to the journals.

And a video of how she sounds, the noise disappears after 1500rpm so its definitely another tappet or three that have shít the bed..

Another issue was a PAS line that refused to stay sealed, luckly i managed to seal it hence the "looks good" in the video..

Certainly not happy with the noise but hey ho what can ya do..

New tappets to be done shortly.

They are certainly a source of entertainment !
Did you pick up a used oil distribution unit or a new one, I’m guessing it was fecked in the bore?

Ah yes the bore was wrecked.

It went for a flying lesson hence the lack of pics ;)

Everything on the top end is new except for the tappets!!

;)
Atleast she now has brilliant oil pressure ;)

Feckin' hell. sounds more like an old steam train chuffing along.

It does dunt it.

The noise totally disappears above 1300rpm..

Just a few dead lifters..

I've put my ear to the rocker covers and i'm 98% sure its the right bank..

I'll fix 'er ;)
