Think these questions got lost in the mix...

Couple of really noddy questions... better to ask than burn a box.

What should I clean everything down with as I reassemble, just some WD/release oil?

Do I need to pack any of the bearings with grease - I'm guessing no, just use some MTF?

I've noticed lots of contaminants on the parts, so what's the best way to clean them off prior to final reassembly, release oil doesn't seem to work that well, should I wash with white spirit?

Guess I'd better buy the compressor I've been eyeing up at Aldi then :D

2.5HP 9.5CFM 24 litre tank, not sure of the duty cycle. but 80 quid...

Yeah man you defo need air, I use brake cleaner in a pump spray by the bucket load, for that brand new dry finish you can't beat soaking your parts in it and blowing them off!

:D

Patio is mid clean lol.

an old gas bottle with a y piece ,makes a good extra reservoir so as to help with high air usage tools like guns and also makes compressed air portable

While I was buying the compressor a chap told me that the other Aldi in Hudders was selling all their air gear off at knock down prices...

Bobbed over and grabbed:
2x 1L compressor oil @ 1.49 each
1x Impact Wrench with 4 torque settings @ 9.99 (it actually works too, wtf!)
1x extra air cleaner/regulator with a 2m & 10m hose for the unregulated 2nd output on the compressor @ 9.99
1x 3 inch cutting wheel @ 4.99
1x 10m retractable air hose @ 14.99

Fair chuffed with that - it's not exactly all pukka quality but it's cheap as chips AND has a 3 year warranty...

Couple with the accessory kit I got with the compressor (hose, blow off gun, paint gun, tyre inflater with gauge, and a wash spray thing.

Only other thing I want now is a decent die grinder.

Wonder how long I can go without holing a hose :D

You inspired me to get going Got my trainer box apart today all seems ok in there casings look like new giving it a good clean up tomorrow in my new parts washer

Parts Washer? Sounds useful, but I need another shed before I buy anything else!

Got to drive to Boston Spa at some point this week to collect a 300tdi r380 minus the extension case, fingers crossed the reverse idler is good on that then I can crack on with reassembly.

Doing some lanes around Hudds with some mates tomorrow, should be a laugh.

Yer something I looked at years ago as taking boxes and engine apart u don't want the grit and muck in the bottom of ur bucket on em so the pumps are filtered and they have a false floors so ur not cleaning in the grit. Thing that swayed me was I got recommended by a mate to get one as he borrowed one when I did his engine and said it made life much easier.

Ooo lanes wish I could get out and play. but I have no winch at the mo so abit Riskey

Bearing races pulled off the lay shaft:

Tried some heat to get the pinion support bearing outer track from the front cover plate - not budging - suspect it'll need welding round the inner face....

The layshaft track is just loose though, that can't be right surely?

as i said before loctite races in case once you know shimmings right with dry build no selector shaft ,you can punch input bearing race out after removing seal, front bearing cover doesnt locate bearings case does hat only secure them

The top one should pop out no problem, new bearing is about £4 from memory but save the clip!

The bottom one I didn't try and remove......just knocked a new one in to a new front cover cos I swapped from long to short spec

they were cheap **** bearings then:eek:

Nope, Timken

I just get them cheap

Actually come to think of it it might have been £4 for the inner pinion shaft bearing and £9 for that one......

Cheers James, that worked a charm - I need to stop being such a fanny!

Now to get the cover plate cleaned up and painted.

Going to have to buy some threaded bar to extend my puller for the pinion bearing...
