Think I should have a page or two before, got ahead of myself. Sorry dude

Seriously though have a Ganda at those vids
Great resource

OK will do, the box is stood vertically on bell at the moment, should I lay it down and see if rotating the pinion helps?

Had it back apart, pin had moved out of forks and spool due to all the faffing, sorted now.

Final questions...

How do I torque up the layshaft bolt? Should I just use windy gun?

Also is it ok to fit oil pump after extension case? Don't want to mess up the seal trying to align pump sprocket

1/2 inch windy gun is fine as long as its tight then stake nut , i fit extension case with pump in just align them by eye, but you could fit pump after only undo 3 of the 6 bolts

Is there any value to fitting an oil cooler to an R380 in the UK, engine is modded so pushing over 200bhp, only thing is the ashcroft cooler kit doesn't have a thermostatic valve so the oil will stay cold longer from start up, any thoughts? Waste of time?

i had looked at it

obviously have no actual experience

my v8 lt77 had a bogbrush cooler non thermostatic from factory BUT theres a lot of tunnel heat in a v8 fitment

think v8 r380 did not have a cooler though so :/

the ashcroft kit is not pocket money so i was trying to decide between doing the job right or simplifying my setup

i think for a vehicle that tows heavy weight a cooler is as good as mandatory, for an off road vehicle there probably wont be that much heat buildup

i dont know if a cooler would increase your oil capacity or if it simply drains back into the box at rest

oil coolers were factory fitted for v8s and later engines ,i think they are a good addition, some lt77s have cooler option all r380s do

Cracked on with the rebuild today, it's practically done, just need to press on the oil seal collar and paint the case....

Assembled the oil pump with the new gasket, fitted the new o-ring, vaselined up the recess it fits into, pressed in the pump, fitted the new screws with some RTV to seal them:

Pressed in the new rear support bearings:

Fit the reverse sensor with new washer:

Pressed in the oil feed ring:

Built up reverse, 5th gears, selector, fitted new snap ring to hold reverse/5th hub in place, fitted collets, tightened and stake layshaft nut:

Pressed on bearing tracks:

Mainshaft oil seal packed with grease to stop the spring falling out:

And fitted:

Oil pickup fitted:

RTV'd around the sandwich plate, aligned the pump drive to the pump, and dropped the extension case over, went on first time with no messing (surprised by that!). Promptly forgot to take a photo I was that chuffed!

Locktighted the detent bung and torqued it up:

Turret rebuild with new bias plate and fitted - will need to adjust the bias a bit:

As said above, just needs the oil collar on and a lick of paint:

Job FINALLY jobbed!!!

Massive thanks to JM for his mad skills, Phil for the replacement case, and to everyone else for general support!

LT230 rebuild next up, with HD cross pin & extended sump.

Top work Ben, glad it's finally back together :)

Me too, the engine rebuild was a doddle by comparison, but I think that's down to not having to frig about for so long looking for spare cases - oopsie!

Well done Ben! Cracking job and a good write up too!

Cheers Phil, I owe you one!

Don't you just love a clean transmission :)

Soon spoil that :D

I'll get the 230 stripped and rebuilt then hopefully bomb over to Richards to fit them using his lift.

Thinking the 230 should go a bit quicker.

Just scratching my head about the best way to press the oil seal collar on...

Not sure if the gearbox will fit in my press stood on end, will have to check in a bit.

Read that it's not a good idea to hammer and drift it onto the shaft - could damage the bearings?

I did my lt77 collar in the press. Does your press bed not drop right down?
No bell housing on mine so input shaft just sat through the bed and use a piece of metal pipe/scaffold bar to push it on.
