The freelander TD4 is sitting outside and refuses to start up. The thing that I have noticed is that when I turn the ignition key one notch I hear the low pressure fuel pump start running. Unlike priming for a couple of seconds like it would usually it continually runs though.

Does anyone have a test to diagnose what is the issue here?

do you have any fuel leaks, you could try a leak back test maybe one or more of the injectors maybe faulty, I had a similar problem plugged Hawkeye in and watched the fuel pressures during cranking, it was very slow to build high pressure and not allowing the ecu to fire the engine, ( needs about 25 bar ish) double checked with a leak back test found no 4 injector letting by very badly replaced with a recon injector now it starts on the button.

No fuel leaks. When the HP pump seals went I could see diesel had run down the engine block. The block is clean and I also checked behind the rear wheel arch for a leak from the LP pump, but nothing. I am going to do a leak back test today, but I am still not 100% sure how I do one.

I was unsure how to do the leak back test, but it's the same for all common rail diesel engines. This pdf with pictures is a good one.

the pumps do continue to run check if you are getting fuel through by undoing one of the pipes a bit if you are it is another problem.

I popped the pipe off the LP filter outlet and flicked the ignition. Diesel came gushing out. Wish I had done that test before taking a punt and sticking a new LP on it yesterday. I have a diagnostic engineer coming out later as I don't think it is the LP side and that leaves too many possible options.

Faulty injector - Not sure it is this as a leak back test did not show much diesel coming out the leak back pipes when the ignition was turned
HP Fuel Pressure Sensor - This was replaced 5 weeks ago with a new one and associated modified wiring loom.
LP Pump - Replaced yesterday :-(

So that leaves the HP pump and the Fuel regulator. Neither of which I have any easy means of testing without a proper pressure gauge or diagnostic hook up.

Hopefully, the mobile engineer will pinpoint the issue for me. I will report back with the actual problem so that others may be spared the same headache.

Ok, here is an update. The diagnostic chap hooked up his equipment and as suspected, computer reads "No fault" Always seems the way with our TD4. We then manage to get it fired up using Easy Start. Once fired up it seemed to run ok. We left it running for about 1 minute, by which time injectors 3 and 4 had leaked back about 25ml of diesel. Turned off the car and as expected it would not start again.

The mechanic tells me there and then that it is injector related as if it was pump related the vehicle would not stay running? Ideally, I would have liked a proper diesel pressure test of the HP rail, before shelling out £600 for a set of recon injectors.

Just keen to get the thoughts of other here as to whether the leak back of 25ml in a short period would indicate knackered injectors?
 
look on youtube for injector leak off test , they should all be about the same so if one is doing more then thats the one , cant remeber exact spec for Freelander :(

They were not the same and 2 of them were leaking off quite badly > 25% over the other 2. Have ordered 4 recon injectors which will hopefully arrive tomorrow. Having read some of the horror stories I was really lucky that all 4 injectors came out with just a gentle twisting. Will update tomorrow with outcome. Fingers crossed.
 
be careful putting those injectors back as if you over tighten the small bolts they are expensive something like £26 each and always use new copper washers
 
Hi, If you can get the motor running before you change them get it really hot I mean hot then they should just lift out with not probs there is a vid on you tube and as the said the guy said they just lift out no probs.
 
Ok, new injectors in and £600 lighter in the pocket. Guess what?

It still does not start :-(

The LP pump just continues to prime. It times out after a while, but from what I have read it will do that if the ECM tells it too. Battery on vehicle is now flat, so will get some leads and try it once more. So that now leaves 2 possible options.
HP Pump or Fuel pressure regulator.

It's the constant priming that I have not seen before that is unusual. In the past it was ignition one click and LP pump would prime for 2 seconds and then stop.
 
Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - Split o-ring on fuel pressure regulator. Just wasted £750 all in on parts.

So much for my diagnostic engineer yesterday who came around. Looked at the leak back test and was adamant it was the injectors.

Buy that man a beer. It's the little o-ring that has gone.
